This fine antique double barrel percussion shotgun is stocked in checkered figured walnut with crisp locks, and barrels engraved E.M. Reilly & Co. London on the upper rib. E.M. Reilly & Co. worked out of a variety of locations in London during the mid to late 1800's, and produced percussion, pinfire, early cartridge shotguns and rifles. Trigger reach is 14" and this shotgun weighs 8.7 pounds.

The bores measure .752" diameter, what we consider 11 gauge today. Both bores are mostly bright with a few small scattered dark or frosted spots. They have been very well maintained for a 140+ year old shotgun. The barrels are finished to a dark blue the 32" barrels are full original length with the small catch at the end to secure the ramrod. Lifting the barrels from the stock the bottom of the breeches have London proof house markings, 12, and a small R.W. stamp.

The shotgun is stocked in European walnut with a checkered wrist and forearm to provide the shooter with a secure grip. The design of the late 19th century English gunmakers is almost modern in shape. The buttplate is wide, nearly flat to spread the felt recoil over a large area. The buttplate is finished to a dark brown, an is shaped with short hand engraved comb the extends just over the heel of the stock. The stock displays a small amount of wood shrinkage with the buttplate edges just above the stock and a very small crack at the tip of the pointed buttplate comb. Look closely, and you may notice that the buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather, it is offset from the right hand shooter's cheek. This feature is called cast-off, and it places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this gun instinctive to point and shoot. The stock displays very few handling marks but does have one dent on the upper right hand side of the checkered wrist. The barrels are secured to the forearm with a single captured wedge key. This key is very tightly fitted and the hooked breeches fit snugly to the tang. Place the locks at half cock, drift the key loose using a small brass or hardwood drift, remove the ramrod, lift the barrels from the muzzle end until the breeches unhook.

The rounded toe displays some of thew swirl pattern of the walnut stock. The checkeried panel extends well past the grip rail of the triggerguard. The triggerguard grip rail has been neatly hand engraved and the two mounting screws have the heads fitted with the slots neatly aligned with the barrel. The triggerguard bow is expertly hand engraved with decorative scroll work and the front final is engraved as a pineapple with a fluer de lys finial. The ramrod entry pipe is shaped with a similar decorative finial. The tapered ramrod appears to be fully original with a flared tip and covered worm on the opposite end.

The front action locks are color case hardened. The locks are crisp with secure half cock and full cock notches that properly align at the half and full cock positions. Note some of the very late percussion features such as a very high flash fence to direct the cap spray away from the wood at the end of the breech. Both locks are expertly hand engraved with scrolls and Reilly & Co. below the breech.

A very well made antique late percussion double barrel shotgun with mostly bright bores and crisp English locks. At approximately 140+ years old this shotgun has some small handling marks, but is still very finely finished. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
