The .50 caliber straight octagon Colerain barrel is 35" from the muzzle to the breech. The barrel is 15/16" octagon across the flats. The octagon corners of the barrel are crisp and square. Finished a lovely chocolate brown, the tone of the brown finish is a nice compliment to the red tone of the walnut stock. The .50 caliber bore is bright and clean, cut rifled with six radius grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. We recommend our, #BALL-490, .490" round balls, #OX-18-50-D, .018" Ox-Yoke ticking patches for accurate shooting. The fixed rear sight is a classic Pennsylvania style with a flat top dovetailed 11" ahead of the breech. A brass blade front sight with integral base is dovetailed behind the muzzle.
The stock is very neatly shaped and finished. The rifle is in new, unfired condition and has none of the marks associated with use. The stock does have one hard knot that was finished in place located just behind the raised carving at the front edge of the comb. The comb of the brass buttplate is shaped with five flats. The nearly flat buttplate will help spread the recoil of the .50 caliber rifle. A line of incised carving runs from the toe along the bottom of the buttstock to the rear of the triggerguard. The top view shows the flared tang breech plug with a raised carved Fluer de Lys. A single bolt passes through to engage the trigger plate below. Three small steel pins retain the barrel the forearm. The square toe is protected with a brass toeplate. The brass triggerguard is neatly hand filed with crisp flats front and rear. The bow of the guard is hand engraved with a floral design. Round ramrod pipes with incised rings secure the ramrod to the stock. The ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. A brass muzzle cap secured by copper rivets is fitted to protect the end grain of the stock. The wood behind the muzzle cap has been gently relieved to allow easy access to the ramrod. The side panel is fitted with a brass sideplate shaped with sweeping curve and hand engraving. The square cheek piece is inlaid with a hand engraved flowering hunter's star. The wrist and cheek are neatly hand engraved with raised and incised carving.
Ignition is provided by the Dale Johnson flint lock, by Jim Chambers. The lock is polished bright and hand engraved with a decorative border, scrolls, and is signed M. Compton below the pan. Tuned for best performance, this lock is fitted with a heavy mainspring, for fast lock time and best sparking. Order a few of our 3/4" English gun flints. The frizzen shows only a few marks from spark testing. A stainless steel vent liner is well centered on the pan of the lock. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The trigger has a wide curled face with scroll back design. The trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear of the lock.
The .50 caliber 15/16" octagon barrel gives it a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. The rifle is as-new, unfired by contemporary maker M. Compton. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
