The .41 caliber bore is rifled with seven grooves and lands, and the octagon barrel measures 34-1/2" long. The first inch of the muzzle is coned to approximately .42 caliber. The bore is mostly bright with crisp rifling visible, but does have scattered pits throughout. A small silver blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The sight appears as a "grain of rice" and creates a very fine sight picture. The flat top step adjustable rear sight is positioned 6-1/2" ahead of the breech, with the dovetail 4" ahead of the sight. The barrel exterior has developed a dark brown patina, with some pitting around the nipple at the breech from corrosive cap spray. The barrel must have been polished long ago and a two line stamping about 3-1/2" ahead of the breech is now illegible. We could only make out the letter "G". The long slender tang of the hooked breech has two bolts that passes through to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is retained to the forearm with a single wedge key with no escutcheon plates.
This halfstock rifle has a classic late 19th century Central to Eastern U.S. appearance with slender shaping, a deep crescent buttplate, and triggerguard with offset grip rail. The rifle is stocked in curly maple and the finish has aged to a dark almost black tone, a few areas of the finish have flaked off. The rifle is trimmed in brass furniture with a pewter forend cap, which also serves as the ramrod entry pipe. The stock has a well used appearance with many handling marks. A brass toeplate is secured with screws to protect this delicate area of the stock from damage. The ramrod passes through two pipes soldered to the barrel's under rib. The end of the hollow rib is filled with solder. The ramrod appears to be old with a period covered worm. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-36-10 to service this rifle. The buttstock does not have a cheek piece. The steel tear drop sideplate is tipped toward the toe of the stock and a single bolt passes through to engage the lock. As with many antique guns the stock does have a crack from the breech to the sideplate. The crack has been repaired to stabilize it. The side panel is very well shaped with slender proportions. No cheek piece is shaped on the stock.
The percussion lock is decorated with die embossed scrolls and is stamped Warranted. The lock has developed the same textured brown patina as the barrel. The tumbler has only a single position, so this lock is either in the fired, or cocked position. The steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is a modern replacement. The lock is mated to a square face hooked breech. This percussion breech is drilled with a "vent" hole, which could also be used to pick the flash channel to assure it is clear. You will want to be clear of this vent when firing the rifle. Both triggers are shaped with a very slender profile. The single lever double set triggers will only fire from the set position. You may set the triggers before of after cocking the lock, but the triggers will only fire from the set position.
