The tapered round 33" barrel, including breech plug, is rifled with a .451" diameter bore with Rigby style rifling with eight narrow lands, wide grooves, with a fast twist for the .45 caliber 450 grain Volunteer bullet. We offer the correct Lyman bullet mold separately, order #LYMAN-451-114. Nicely polished and blued, the blue black finish is in very good condition. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is tapered round, with a distinct flat at the breech, which makes a smooth transition to the tang. The top of the barrel is stamped PARKER-HALE LTD. BIRMINGTON, ENGLAND. The serial number and a British proof mark are stamped near the breech. The serical number does not have the H, which was added when they changed to Henry style rifling. The military style ladder style rear sight is calibrated to 1,000 yards. A hooded front post sight is dovetailed directly behind the muzzle.
The figured walnut buttstock has only a few minor handling marks from use. The wrist and forearm are both checkered. The buttstock has the correct circular cartouche mark. The barrel on this rifle has been bedded at the breech and under both barrel bands, and the light brown bedding is visible along the edges of the barrel channel in these areas. This was often done by serious target shooters. The brass buttplate and triggerguard are retained with blued steel screws, as original. The brass triggerguard has a swivel mounted to the front of the bow. The forward swivel is mounted to the forward most band. A brass muzzlecap protects the end grain of the stock. The barrel is served by a metal ramrod, with the original factory bore protector. The ramrod is fitted with a brass loading tip, and the opposite end has 12-28 male threads. No cheek is formed on the left side of the buttstock. Two brass sideplate washers are inlet into the stock, and counterbored to accept the two lock bolts.
The color case hardened lock has the classic Enfield shaped percussion hammer. Inside this lock is well finished, with tempered parts. This Enfield rifle is fitted with a hardened steel 5/16-18 threaded musket nipple. The lock has also been marked with a crown on the tail and Parker Hale below the nipple bolster. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
