The .54 caliber barrel is 1" octagon, 26" long. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. We recommend our #BALL-530 Hornady pure lead .530" round ball, #OX-15-50-W Ox Yoke .015" lubed patch, and 70 grains of black powder for best accuracy. If hunting big game, in thick brush, try our 54 caliber Maxi-ball. Increase the powder charge as needed, to achieve best accuracy with this heavier bullet. Recoil will increase, but will not be noticed during the hunt. The blue finish on the barrel has only a few light scratches from regular use. The T/C factory rear sight is click adjustable for elevation, and screw adjustable for windage. The front sight is a factory patridge blade sight.
The American black walnut stock is in great condition with only a few minor handling marks. The buttplate is blued steel, to match the triggerguard. This rifle is fitted with a factory wooden ramrod with a blued tip threaded to accept 10-32 loading and cleaning accessories. The bottom view shows the polished and blued triggerguard. No cheek piece is carved on the T/C Renegade. Not to be confused with the T/C Renegade Hunter, this is the deluxe version with double set triggers.
Our top view shows the hooked breech, which allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlug, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
The color case hardened flint lock with factory cast-in engraving by Thompson Center works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. Notice the bright rainbow of mottled colors. We recommend our 5/8" knapped English flints for use with this lock. The factory vent liner is centered correctly above the pan to provide instant ignition. The rifle is fitted with a double lever double set trigger. The trigger is correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension. Or turn it fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold climates, where a numb finger might release the light set trigger too early. When training youngsters, we prefer to start with the set trigger disabled.
