The 38" swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The .54 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven round bottom grooves with a caliber appropriate 1 in 66" slow twist for patched round ball. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with brass base dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle. The flat top rear sight is polished bright and dovetailed 9-1/4" from the breech. The barrel is finished to a textured brown and the top flat is signed J Bohan XXI just behind the rear sight. A single bolt passes through the flared thumbnail tang to engage the trigger plate below. Three small brass keys retain the barrel to the forearm.
The curly maple stock of this long rifle is figured with random stripes from the butt to the muzzle. The stock is stained to a medium brown with reddish undertone, and finished to a semi-gloss. The buttstock has the classic angular lines associated with Lancaster County makers. A line of raised carving defines the transition from comb to wrist. An incised molding from the toe to the triggerguard creates a slimming effect. The early wide buttplate has a pleasant curve, comfortable to aim, it engages your shoulder to minimize recoil. The comb of the buttplate is decorated with five flats and a band. The top view shows the Fleur de Lis molding that surrounds the tang of the breech plug. This raised carving flows down into the raised lock panel moldings. The brass patchbox is hand engraved on the head, door, and side panels. The engraving is cut with very fine lines and neatly shaded for contrast against the polished brass background. Lift on the release spring to open the patchbox door to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing extra flints or shooting accessories.
The toe has a short engraved brass toeplate with a decorative finial. The triggerguard has a Germanic influence with a wide bow and offset grip rail, and is correctly mounted with pins. A Fleur de Lis molding surrounds the skirt of the ramrod entry pipe and transitions to a raised molding that runs the length of the ramrod channel. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain. The ramrod pipes are octagon with raised rings on the ends for strength. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The side view shows the polished brass sideplate, and combination of raised incised carving that decorates the area ahead of, below, and behind the cheek.
Ignition is provided by the Dale Johnson flint lock, by Jim Chambers. The lock is polished bright and nicely compliments the barrel and stock finishes. Tuned for best performance, this lock is fitted with a heavy mainspring, for fast lock time and best sparking. Order a few of our 3/4" English gun flints. The frizzen shows only a few marks from spark testing. A stainless steel vent liner is well centered on the pan of the lock. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The single trigger is polished bright and provides a smooth release of the lock.
