This .54 caliber Thompson Center Hawken appears to be assembled from a kit gun stock and a 32" Green Mountain IBS barrel. This rifle is offered in used condition with some patina on the furniture and a few small handling marks on the stock and barrel. Weight is 97 pounds, and with a trigger reach of 13-3/4 inches, the rifle is perfectly setup for today's average man size shooter.
The factory barrel has been replaced with a Green Mountain drop-in barrel. The barrel is .54 caliber, 1" octagon, 32" length. The bore is cut rifled with a 1 in 66" rate of twist to shoot a patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. We recommend our .530" round ball, .015" lubricated patch, over a charge of 70 grains of GOEX FFg black powder. The front sight has been replaced with a T/C 906 patridge blade sight with the tip painted white for visibility. The rear sight is a T/C 907 primitive sight that screws down the existing screw holes and is fitted with dovetail with square notch flat top sight. The right hand side of the barrel has two worn spots in the blue finish.
The rifle is stocked in straight grain black walnut and trimmed in brass furniture that has naturally aged to a mellow patina. This does appear to be a kit gun stock and the wood is a little blocky near the lock panels. The flexible synthetic ramrod has threaded tips to accept 8-32 and 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories.
The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlug, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
The color case hardened percussion lock has the early style hammer and is factory engraved. It features a fly detent, for smooth lock action, and a powerful coil mainspring, for fast lock time. The breech is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple for a musket cap. Double lever double set triggers are well adjusted, to fire set or unset. When the rear trigger is set (latched), the front trigger has a hair-trigger release, perhaps 2 or 3 ounces. The adjustment screw between the triggers allows even finer or coarser adjustment, as desired. Or, turn the screw fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold weather.
This Thompson Center Hawken Rifle is in used condition with a .54 caliber round ball twist Green Mountain barrel. The barrel has non-adjustable sights for primitive shooting matches. This American made rifle is ready to take into the woods on your next hunt. We invite trades, and we buy T/C guns.
