This percussion Jaeger hunting rifle has a bright .62 caliber bore and has been well maintained. The rifle is stocked in walnut and trimmed in brass furniture. Due to the shorter barrel, modest weight, and sling swivel mounts, this is an ideal rifle for hunting big game in densely wooded or mountainous areas. The trigger reach on this rifle is a long 15-1/2" for a taller size shooter, and the weight is 8.0 pounds.
The .62 caliber 31" long swamped octagon barrel makes this rifle feel light and handy. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. Cut rifled the bore has six lands and radius grooves with a 1 in 66" twist for a tightly patched round ball. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The barrel is finished to a smooth brown, we note some scratches near the front sight, possibly from a file that slipped when the rifle was being sighted in. A brass blade front sight is dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. We note the sights have been staked to help secure them in their dovetails. The straight tang breech plug is mounted by a single bolt which engages the triggerplate below. Three small pins retain the barrel to the forearm.
The straight grain walnut stock has a few small handling marks from use. The brass buttplate is wide and flat for spreading the felt recoil when shooting full loads. The top view shows the raised carving that surrounds the tang. The buttstock is fitted with a small brass cap box. The door easily opens to reveal a small round storage compartment. The bottom view shows no toeplate is used to protect this delicate area during loading. The large brass triggerguard is mounted with a combination of screw and pin. The large bow will easily accept a gloved finger when hunting. A sling swivel is fitted to the toe of the buttstock. Forward, a sling swivel rests against a ramrod pipe to prevent blocking the ramrod channel. No sling is included with this rifle. The 3/8" diameter wooden ramrod is fitted with an brass tip to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The ramrod passes through two brass ramrod pipes and matching entry pipe. A beaver tail cheek rest is used on the opposite side of this rifle. The buttstock behind the cheek is decorated with a combination of raised and incised carving. A large brass sideplate with pointed tail has two dome head bolts that pass through to engage the lock on the opposite side.
Ignition is provided by this L&R percussion lock that has been browned to match the barrel. The main spring for the hammer is very strong. The drum is fitted with a stainless steel musket nipple. The double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release.
This big caliber, short barrel Jaeger rifle is well balanced and will be a joy to carry on your next big game hunt. The bore is bright and it is ready to shoot. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
