Stocked in figured maple, this percussion halfstock Hawken rifle is trimmed with traditional iron furniture. The .50 caliber 30" barrel and iron trim are rust blued, to a deep matte finish. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. This rifle has many inletting gaps and the metal stands proud of the wood in many areas. This rifle has a trigger reach of 13-3/4", to fit an average shooter. This rifle weighs 8.7 pounds.
The .50 caliber barrel measures 1" and is 30" long. The bore is cut rifled with eight lands with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright, and is ready to shoot. A long step adjustable buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed so it sits 6-1/2" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver blade front sight set in a copper base is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The barrel is rust blued to a matte finish to reduce glare when sighting.
The curly maple stock is stained dark, with a reddish undertone. The stock is trimmed in iron furniture with a classic Hawken crescent buttplate that securely engages your shoulder. There are many inletting gaps around the buttplate. Two wedge keys retain the barrel. The wedge keys pass through oval escutcheon plates, we note these plates stand proud of the stock. By drifting out the wedge keys and removing the ramrod, the hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily removed for cleaning. This is a nice ability to have on any rifle, making cleaning and maintenance much easier.
The long tang of the rifle is matched below by the long triggerplate, the two sandwich the wood of the wrist between them and strengthen that portion of the stock. The tang stands proud of the wood and the screw heads are not filed flush. The long triggerplate of the rifle extends from its rearmost position, behind the triggerguard, forward to a position well ahead of the guard. This long plate adds extra strength to the stock that, historically, made these rifles so popular on the Great Plains and in the Rocky Mountains. We note the stock is chipped ahead of the trigger plate. Well forward the ramrod is retained by two forward pipes that are soldered to the barrel under rib and one entry pipe. The entry pipe sits a 1/4" behind the iron forend cap. The wood is rounded as it leads into the forend cap, which makes it stand proud of the wood on all four corners. The wooden ramrod is fitted with an iron tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. A beaver tail shaped cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this .50 caliber rifle. The single lock bolt passes through a washer escutcheon plate to secure the lock on the opposite side.
The L&R percussion Hawken lock has been rust blued to match the barrel. This mid-19th century styled lock has a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and fly detent, all nice internal features. The wood stands proud of the rear portion of the lock plate. A stainless steel nipple for No. 11 caps is installed. The L&R early double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire the lock set, or unset. The lock and triggers may be cocked or set in any sequence.
