Constructed by well known contemporary gun builder Mr. Jack Garner this nice Southern Mountain percussion longrifle is in good condition. Stocked in maple with some figure in the butt and forend, this rifle has smooth oil finish. The maple is stained light brown, with golden undertones. The Green Mountain barrel, small Siler percussion lock, and iron furniture are finished to a dark brown. With an overall weight of 7.3 pounds and a trigger reach of 15" this longrifle was built for a shooter over 6" tall.
The .50 caliber Green Mountain barrel is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist for a patched round ball. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The front sight is a steel blade with the face painted orange for visibility. A semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech.
The gently curved iron buttplate and decorative iron triggerguard are classic designs found on longrifles from the Tennessee school of rifles. A few very plain primitive Tennessee rifles omit the buttplate. This correct and sturdy buttplate was tightly inlet, and it will protect the end grain of the buttstock during hard use. The curly maple stock is in good condition though there are some minor handling marks from normal use. A short iron toeplate been fitted to the rifle. The iron triggerguard is retained with screws both front and rear in traditional fashion. A sling swivel and a button stud are mounted to attach a sling. The forward swivel is correctly positioned to rest against the ramrod pipe. The ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The side panel is fitted with a flush mounted iron sideplate.
Sure fire ignition is provided by the well known and very reliable small Siler percussion lock. The drum is well supported in the lock plate. A hardened steel .255-28 threaded nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is installed. Double lever double set triggers by R. E. Davis are tuned to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
Assembled using quality parts throughout, this is a lightweight and handy example of a percussion Tennessee rifle. Used, in good condition, the bore looks bright and clean. The stock and brown finish have a few marks from normal use and cleaning. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
