This Hopkins and Allen rifle is a replica of a clever Underhammer Rifle, most often made in New York or New England. The action and barrel are finished to a dark brown with a brass ramrod pipe mounted directly to the barrel. The stock varnish is smooth, with satin sheen, and a few scattered handling marks. Stocked with a 14" trigger reach, this rifle should fit todays average shooter well. This rifle weighs only 7.6 pounds.

This .36 caliber underhammer rifle has a 32" octagon barrel, marked on the top flat Hopkins & Allen Arms. The barrel is rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for patched round balls. The bore is bright. We recommend our Hornady .350" round ball, Ox-Yoke .015" lubricated patches. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn sight with a screw adjustment for elevation. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with brass base.

Stocked in maple, stained to brown and rubbed back to a golden undertone, and fitted with a brass buttplate. Underhammers are a correct style from this 1830 - 1850 period. A 9mm diameter ramrod just clears the .36 caliber bore and is fitted with tip with a integral cleaning jag. The ramrod does not have any provisions for threaded accessories. Shaped without a cheek piece, equally suited to a right or left hand shooter.

Our bottom view shows the heart of this underhammer action. The hammer strikes the nipple directly, providing direct ignition into the powder chamber, with no turns. This underhammer rifle requires a 1/4-28 nipple, #RST-S, but we recommend our special extra long Underhammer nipple, #UHC-5S, which provides a bit more nozzle effect for the percussion cap flash. Nipples are sold separately. See our Catalog for several other choices. The nipple is seated in a deep nickel silver flash cup to protect the wood from cap spray. This ingenious action is very simple, with few moving parts, typical of Yankee Ingenuity from this period. Notice the curved trigger, which has excellent trigger geometry, and smooth trigger release. The large trigger bow acts as the mainspring for the hammer.

This underhammer rifle is used with some marks on the stock as well as the brown finish. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
