This Ohio percussion fullstock rifle is fitted with a .50 caliber 42" straight octagon barrel with hooked breech. Stocked in maple, the rifle is trimmed in brass furniture. The R.E. Davis Hawken lock is mated to single lever double set triggers, that fire from the set position only. The .50 caliber barrel is finished to a dark matte brown. The barrel is signed Sam Gorham on the top flat. The rifle has been test fired, but is otherwise unfired. Trigger reach is 13" to fit an shorter than average size shooter. The rifle weighs 9.4 pounds.

The .50 caliber barrel is 40-1/2" long by 15/16" straight octagon. The bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for patched round balls. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The barrel is finished to a dark brown to reduce glare when sighting. The front sight is a silver blade set in a brass base dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. The rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the hooked breech. The barrel is retained to the forearm with three captured wedge keys.

The maple stock has a few scattered ares of figure over the length of the stock. The buttstock is fitted with a 19th century style crescent buttplate to securely engage your upper arm/shoulder when sighting. All the brass furniture has a hand burnished satin sheen. When viewed from above the slim lines of the comb come into view. The breech plug tang is a Thompson Center style. The hooked breech allows the barrel to be dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, carefully drift the captured keys past the underlug. The keys are captured to the stock to prevent loss. The barrel can be lifted from the stock. Handle the stock carefully with the barrel dismounted. The thin forearm will not have the barrel to support it! Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.

The bottom view shows the square toe. The polished brass triggerguard is correctly pinned to the stock. Two simple round brass ramrod pipes, along with matching entry pipe, retain the 5/16" diameter ramrod. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a steel tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. A brass muzzlecap protects the end grain of the stock. No sideplate is fitted to this rifle. The lock bolt secures the lock from the front and is threaded into the tang. A simple shallow square cheek is shaped on the left side of the buttstock.

The Ron Long designed percussion lock by R.E. Davis is shaped with a square inside corner in late percussion fashion. Notice how the front edge of the lock has been shaped into the lock panel. Polished inside, the well tempered parts include a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and a fly detent to allow set triggers. The lock plate is notched for the hooked breech, which is fitted with a 1/4-28 steel nipple for No. 11 percussion cap. The single lever double set triggers fire the lock from the set position only. You must set the triggers before you can cock the lock.

This rifle has a late 19th century Ohio influence and featuring a hooked breech to allow easy cleaning. The .50 caliber bore is bright and ready to shoot, perfect for a day at the range.
