This halfstock rifle is assembled from a mixture of antique and modern parts. We would estimate it was likely altered in the late 1970's to early 1980's. The rifle is stocked in walnut and the stock appears to be modern, while the nickel silver furniture appears to be antique. The percussion lock is a Dean Mitton assembled lock, and is marked on the inside of the lock plate. The double set triggers are modern and will fire the lock set, or unset. The antique barrel is stamped I.H. Robinson, possibly from Philadelphia circa 1850. Trigger reach is 14-3/4" to fit a larger or taller shooter, weight is 9.4 pounds.

This rifle includes:
  • Lyman .335" diameter round ball mold, older single cavity mold that uses small Lyman handles
The 24" long .35 caliber barrel is 1-1/8" at the breech tapering to 1-1/16" at the muzzle. The.35 caliber bore is rifled with seven lands and narrow grooves. The bore on this rifle is in very good condition with only a few small scattered speckles. The exterior has aged to a silvery-brown patina. The top flat is stamped I, H. ROBINSON with decorative scroll work to either side. The breech plug is inset to create a slimmer wrist with the lock panels tapering widest at the front in late percussion fashion. The tang is a short English style. The front sight is a globe sight with a small post with bead. The barrel does not appear to have had a rear sight fitted. A Sporting style tang sight is fitted to the wrist of the rifle. We note the upper right hand corner of the tang sight staff is cracked.

The walnut stock appears to be modern and is shaped with a raised cheek piece for a right hand shooter. The nickel silver furniture has a well aged appearance. The wood to metal fit is reasonable with some small gaps around the lock mortise. The breech, hooked breech tang, and barrel channel have some visible bedding, with a lighter brown tone, along the edges. The forearm is fitted with a poured pewter forend cap. The cap has very modern shaping.

The bottom view shows the nickel silver toeplate is secured with a steel screw. The triggerguard has a large bow with a curled grip rail, found on Philadelphia and Ohio school longrifles. The barrel rib is fitted with nickel silver ramrod pipes. The pipes appear to be modern. The ramrod has a brass jag on the rear end and 10-32 threads on the opposite end.

The Dean Mitton percussion lock has a gray brown patina finish. The lock plate is decorated with a few lines of engraved scrolls. This lock will not reliably engage the half cock position while in the stock. The sear will securely engage the full cock position. The double set triggers will fire the lock from either the set, or unset position. The nipple is a modern 1/4-28 nipple.
