This well made English fowler is stocked in cherry accented with raised carving and silver wire inlay. The stock is shaped with a slender graceful appearance and the carving is very well executed. This fowler's overall architecture closely resembles an antique by Barbar shown in Of Sorts for Provincials by Jim Mullins, our #BOOK-OSFP. A few of the carved designs are similar to those found on antique Hudson Valley fowlers. this fowler has a 13-1/2" trigger reach to fit todays average size shooter. Weighing in at 8.3 pounds, recoil should be manageable. This fowler is unsigned as to a maker. The raised carving and wire inlay work were performed by contemporary builder Randy Werkheiser.

The 20 gauge, 41" tapered round barrel has a bright and clean .620" diameter bore. We recommend our 20 gauge wads and cards for use with lead, or Bismuth shot. The tapered round barrel has a turned decorative band a the breech. A steel blade front sight is soldered to the front of the barrel. No rear sight is mounted in typical fowling gun fashion. This fusil is fully qualified for use in the popular North West Trade Gun match, shooting both round balls a paper targets, and clay birds thrown from a trap house, under NMLRA rules. The barrel finish has a few small marks in it from handling.

This well made fowler has classic English architecture, with a wide flat buttplate to spread the recoil over a large area. Look closely, and you may notice that the buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather, it is offset from the right hand shooter's cheek. This feature is called cast-off, and it places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this fowler instinctive to point and shoot. The cherry has a reddish with gold undertone, which nicely contrasts the dark brown furniture. The sides of the buttstock are neatly decorated with silver wire inlay. All the wire inlay is finished flush. The top view shows the stepped buttplate comb. The wood at the very tip of the comb has a small repaired chip. Notice the flowing tapered baluster wrist. The lock panels are gently tapered widest at the rear, a classic early feature. The ends of the lock panels are decorated with raised carved torch designs, all of which are very neatly executed and shaded. All the carving is very well executed, which can be tricky on cherry due to the softness of the wood.

The browned iron triggerguard is a fowler style with a flaming urn finial. The triggerguard has a raised molding around it and the end has a raised carved potted plant design, similar in design to a antique Hudson Valley Fowler. The forearm is shaped with a small palm swell at the ramrod entry pipe, and silver wire inlay decorates the stock on the sides just behind the ramrod entry pipe. The forend is graceful and just wraps the tapered round barrel. The forearm has a raised molding along both the upper barrel channel and ramrod channel. Formed sheet brass ramrod pipes with raised rings secure the tapered ramrod with brass tip. The ramrod is threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. The sideplate is polished browned steel, neatly inlet into the side panel. The sideplate has a classic English shape.

The round faced flint lock, by Jim Chambers, provides reliable ignition. This attractive early English flint lock has a round faced cock and plate, and rounded frizzen and pan surfaces. Locks of this design are often found on American longrifles and fowlers of the 1730 - 1770 era. The plate, cock, and other surfaces of this lock were polished then browned to a smooth dark finish. The edges of the brown display some wear from handling. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner. Positioned well above the bottom of the pan and centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay. Study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Used, with a well aged patina this fowler has a few small handling marks.
