One of the most famous American Military arms, the U. S. Model 1803 rifle was produced at Harper's Ferry Arsenal. We offer this lovely replica, hand made by the well known gunmaker, Mr. David Motto. This rifle bears Mr. Motto's military style cartouche mark on the side panel of the stock. This detailed replica was carefully made, and neatly finished. The book The Southern Arsenal - Harper's Ferry by Dr. James B. Whisker notes that the Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia produced over 4,000 of the rifles from 1803-1807 with over 15,000 additional rifles produced in the years leading up to 1820. Weighing in at 8.7 pounds and with at trigger reach of 13-3/4" this rifle is set up for today's average size shooter.
Colerain's cut rifled .54 caliber 33" octagon-to-round barrel is finished to a smooth silvery-brown. The .54 caliber bore is cut rifled with six radius rifled grooves with a 1 in 56" rate of twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The radius groove rifling eliminates the sharp inside corner of the rifling groove, said to make the bore much easier to wipe clean. Our customers who own Colerain rifle barrels like this quality touch. The front sight is a steel blade dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle, The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 8-3/4" ahead of the breech.
Stocked in American black walnut, the wood has the natural color, not stained, but simply finished with Linseed Oil, exactly like the originals made at Harper's Ferry. The butt view shows the classic 1803 style brass patchbox with iron push button release in the comb of the buttplate. Push the button to allow the patchbox lid to open under spring tension, revealing a large oval patchbox cavity. The button release works smoothly and latches securely. Trimmed in brass, the furniture has aged to a mellow patina with some darker speckling. Notice the grain of the walnut, which runs straight through the buttstock and wrist, giving this rifle good strength at the wrist, a desirable feature in a military firearm. From above notice the subdued square Kentucky rifle style cheek piece. Made with a rounded toe, no toeplate is used. The brass triggerguard is correctly attached with two pins. A single iron wedge key retains the barrel. Remove the tang screw, if you wish to dismount the barrel for cleaning. A small brass band trims the forend securing the end grain, just ahead of the ramrod entry pipe. The steel ramrod has the flared steel tip used on earlier production guns. We note a nut has been installed at the bottom of the ramrod channel, and the ramrod has to be unscrewed before it can be removed. This ramrod has the male 12-24 threads in antique fashion. A simple military style brass sideplate retains the two lock bolts.
The R.E. Davis 1803 lock is polished bright. The lock has been marked near the tail HARPERS FERRY 1803 and with a rear facing eagle over US just forward of the double throated cock. Factory tempered, the frizzen snaps open smartly, and the tip of the flint delivers sparks directly into the pan. A stainless steel vent liner is perfectly placed, positioned for best ignition, just above the top of the pan. Study this vent location, perfectly positioned to produce fastest ignition. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
If you seek a detailed correct U. S. Model 1803 Harper's Ferry flint longrifle, made from the very best parts, we strongly recommend that you order this nice rifle by a well respected American gun maker. Lightly used, the rifle has a few small handling marks associated with normal use. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. It bears the maker's touchmark, but is not obviously marked from the outside, except for the military style cartouche inspector mark in the stock. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
