Many builders in the 1800's made rifles for the fur or Indian trade such as H.E. Leman, E.K. Tryon, and others. This rifle has the classic early 1800's styling found on trade rifles produced in or near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania by H.E. Leman. This well made replica is stocked in curly maple, with an iron buttplate and brass furniture. The Buckridge flintlock and the .45 caliber Colerain barrel are finished to a dark brown. This rifle is lightly used and has a few handling marks from carrying, firing, and cleaning. Contemporary gun maker Ted Kramer has selected best quality American made parts, for this Trade rifle. This rifle has a 13-1/4" pull, to fit today's average shooter. The rifle weighs 7.4 pounds.
The .45 caliber 33-1/2" Colerain barrel has six lands and radius bottom grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. The barrel exterior is finished to a silvery brown. The bore is bright and ready to shoot. A brass blade front sight is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. A semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 8" forward of the breech.
The maple stock is stained to a warm brown with swirls of darker figure over the length of the stock. The maple stock is oil finished to a satin sheen. Inletting is far superior to the many of the original antique H. E. Leman Indian Trade Rifles we have examined. An iron buttplate is used on this rifle, while the rest of the furniture is brass. This combination of iron and brass is typically seen on original Leman rifles. The buttstock is fitted with a brass oval capbox, whose design is often associated with rifles by E.K. Tryon. The cap box is secured with correct steel screws. The top view shows the rounded end of the slightly flared tang of the breech plug. A single bolt passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. Three steel pins retain the barrel to the forearm.
The bottom view shows the brass toeplate, which is correctly mounted with two iron screws. The triggerguard has a spoon like grip rail, typical of those found on Leman rifles. The triggerguard is correctly mounted with pins and has a large bow for the single trigger. The rifle is fitted with a wooden ramrod with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The ramrod passes through simple round brass pipes. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the forearm. A classic square cheek piece is formed on the left side of the buttstock. The cheek view also shows the simple brass escutcheon surrounding the lock bolt.
This rifle uses a Buckridge early 19th century period flintlock. The lock has been finished to a dark brown. The “full waterproof pan" is made with rain gutters cut to drain any water away from the pan. The cock's jaws have been tipped down to throw sparks directly into the pan. The erect frizzen snaps over a roller bearing on the end of the frizzen spring. All features of late flintlocks, circa 1790 to 1820. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. A single trigger is installed on the rifle. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release.
Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
This attractive late fur trade period rifle is stocked in curly maple and features excellent inletting with tight wood to metal fit. This .45 caliber will be a joy to carry on your next game hunt in the deep woods or at your next reenactment. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
