This longrifle was made by Jim Searles of J.P. Gunstocks and offered as the "Lancaster model", but it has a bit more of a Lehigh Valley style. The rifle is stocked in curly maple and trimmed in polished brass furniture. The Green Mountain barrel is fitted to a L&R Durs Egg lock, and R.E. Davis double set triggers. Trigger reach is 14-1/4" to fit a larger or taller shooter. Weight is x.x pounds.
The Green Mountain cut rifled barrel is .54 caliber, 15/16" octagon by 42" long. The .54 caliber bore is rifled with eight equal lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist for a tightly patched round ball. We recommend our .530" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patching, lubricated with our Mink Oil tallow patch grease, if you require best accuracy. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. Marked Lancaster on the top flat, the barrel has a smooth non-glare chocolate brown finish, that feels slick to the touch. A full buck horn rear sight with V notch, and a high silver blade front sight are fitted, to allow sighting without mirage or glare. One diagonal flat is marked {JP} and .54 at the breech. The other diagonal flat is marked GMT and .54 by the barrel maker.
Stocked in figured curly maple, the semi-gloss varnish finish does have some scattered marks as well as two larger scrapes on the forearm and forend from use in the field. The brass furniture is brightly polished. The Rupp style brass patchbox is a wide early design, with floral finial head. Three steel screws retain the head. A groove in the buttplate admits your fingernail, to cam open the patchbox lid. The cheek piece is very slightly thinner near the front, thicker near the rear, tapering away from the shooter's face during recoil, a nice touch. The toeplate has a fleur-de-lis finial and is neatly inlet. The toeplate and triggerguard are brightly polished and burnished. Three round ramrod pipes retain the 3/8" hickory ramrod. The three pipes are anchored to the barrel with tiny screws, which serve as rod pipe retainers and barrel pins. The entry pipe is fitted flush with the wood, allowing the skirt to be omitted. A classic shallow crescent muzzle cap finishes the forend, and allows a good grip on the ramrod, for easy removal. The ramrod has a 8-32 threaded brass tip for loading and cleaning accessories. The side panel is fitted with a polished brass sideplate with pointed finial, another Lehigh Valley feature.
This Durs Egg flint lock, by L&R, is a copy of a fine London made lock, of the style commonly imported by American longrifle makers for use on their best rifles. Correct in every detail, notice the semi-waterproof pan with rain gutters to drain moisture away fro the priming. An anti-friction roller on the toe of the frizzen rides over a cam on the frizzen spring, for snappy action. The frizzen spring has a concealed mounting screw, installed inside the lock plate. Fast ignition is assured by the unique stainless vent liner. It is concave inside and outside, mounted high to serve as a window to admit the incandescent heat of the center of the flash into the main charge, and slotted to allow removal for easy cleaning. Double set triggers by R. E. Davis will fire this rifle, set or unset. The lock and triggers may be cocked or set in any sequence. Rich chocolate brown coloring on the lock surfaces match the barrel finish nicely.
This longrifle is used with some handling marks. The rifle has a nice quality Green Mountain barrel, L&R flintlock, and R.E. Davis double set triggers. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
