Produced in the style of those rifles popular in the Lancaster County region of Pennsylvania, this flint longrifle was produced circa November 1969 by Leonard A. Meadows of Shady Spring, West Virginia. It is estimated he made approximately 200 rifles from the 1950's to 1970's. The rifle is stocked in maple and is trimmed in brass furniture; the stock has a variety of incised carving while much of the metal is neatly hand engraved. The original lock has been replaced with a Jim Chambers deluxe large Siler flintlock. Weighing in at 9.8 pounds with a trigger reach of 13-1/4” this flint longrifle is perfectly suited for today’s average size shooter.

The heart of the rifle is its .45 caliber straight octagon barrel. Measuring 41-1/4” in length the barrel is 15/16” across the flats and has been finished a nice chocolate brown. The heavy barrel gives this rifle a modest weight, making it ideal to shoot from a rest. The .45 caliber bore is bright and has been well maintained. The bore is rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The muzzle appears to be just slightly coned to ease loading a patched round ball. The top flat is signed +A+L+M. The barrel is fitted with a wide nickel silver blade front sight inset into the top barrel flat. This front sight design does not allow for any movement. This rear sight is a flat top dovetailed 11-1/2" ahead of the breech. Shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses will generally benefit from the extra distance.

The maple stock is stained to a warm brown and finished to a satin sheen. Approximately 55 years in age the stock does have a few small handling marks, from normal use, but nothing of major consequence. All in all, the rifle has been well maintained and cared for ever since its initial construction. A early 19th century brass patchbox has been installed on the rifle. Neatly engraved the box has offset side panels mounted with small iron nails. The head is shaped with opposing crescent moons and a pineapple finial. The stock does display some wood shrinkage around with the some of the edges of the patchbox lifted. The transition from comb to wrist is defined with a line of raised carving. A nickel silver thumbpiece is fitted to the top of the wrist. A incised Fluer de Lys surrounds the tang of the breech plug.

From below the brass toeplate shaped with a decorative end and secured with two iron screws. Toeplates are intended to protect that delicate portion of the stock while loading and cleaning the gun, commonly in contact with the ground this area is subject to nicks and dings and a toeplate helps prevent that. The triggerguard is a very classic Golden Age style and is secured with a combination of pin and screw. The wooden ramrod is held in place by two forward and one entry pipe. The three brass pipes are all finished with paneled flats, and the entry pipe has a overlaid soldered skirt. The ramrod is finished with a barber pole design, but does not have any tips for threaded accessories. A brass muzzlecap has been installed on the rifle to protect the end grain of the wood at that position, much like the buttplate to the rear. The brass sideplate is shaped with sweeping curves and a square tail. The sideplate is hand engraved with a boarder and decorative scrolls. Further back on the rifle a large oval has been set into the cheek. Incised carving can be found flowing around the cheek. Mr. Meadows seemed to favor this style of carving and it is found on many of his rifles. The carving is very well executed with even line weight and sweeping curves.

Ignition for the rifle is currently provided by a Jim Chambers Golden Age flintlock. This lock was retrofitted to the rifle by trimming the plate and does leave some small gaps along the lower edge of the inlet due to the shorter plate on the Golden Age lock. The original Siler flintlock is included with the rifle. This is a very old producion Siler lock which may have been assembled from a kit with some noted changes: the sear appears to be hand made, the mainspring is different, the frizzen is soft and does not spark at all. The original lock fits the inlet perfectly. Behind the pan a large brass insert has been installed against the barrel. This insert is intended to give the barrel extra thickness at the breech and allowed the builder to give the rifle proper geometry by tapering the panels along with the barrel. Through this insert the touch hole has been drilled, giving the flash from the pan direct access to the breech. You often encounter the brass plate on guns from the late 60's, when swamped barrels were not readily available. Below the lock a set of double lever double set triggers has been installed. The triggers are properly tuned to fire the lock from the set, or unset position.

Approximately 55 years old, this .45 caliber longrifle is well fitted and nicely decorated. The barrel has a very good, bright, bore. The lock has been replaced by a modern Jim Chambers Golden Age flintlock. The original lock (does not spark) is included with the rifle. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
