Produced in the style of those rifles popular in the Lancaster County region of Pennsylvania, this flint longrifle was produced circa 1973 by M. T. Koval. The rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in engraved brass furniture; the stock has a variety of raised and incised carving. The .45 caliber barrel has a bright bore that has been well maintained. Ignition is provided by a Dixie Gun Works Ashmore flintlock. Weighing in at 8.7 pounds with a trigger reach of 13-5/8” this flint longrifle is perfectly suited for today’s average size shooter.

The heart of the rifle is its .45 caliber straight octagon barrel. Measuring 45” in length the barrel is 7/8” across the flats and has been finished a nice chocolate brown. The bore is rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The muzzle end is decorated with eight small stars. The top flat is signed M. T. Koval '73 just ahead of the rear sight. The barrel is fitted with a wide synthetic bone blade front sight inset into an iron base that is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. This rear sight is a tall flat top dovetailed 6" ahead of the breech.

The maple stock is stained to a medium brown and finished to a satin sheen. The tall flat buttplate is shaped with five octagon flats and a wedding band. The comb flows forward where it is accented at the wrist by raised carving that flows down into the stock and transitions into incised carving. A large brass patchbox has been installed on the rifle featuring an eagle head finial. Neatly engraved the patchbox is secured with small steel screws. There is a small brass screw in the center of the patchbox door that secures the door down and prevents the door from opening. The decorative patchbox on this rifle can be returned to normal function, to latch tightly, by a skilled gunmaker who is familiar with patchbox geometry.

The top view shows the flared thumbnail tang of the breech plug that is surrounded by raised and incised carving. The lock panels are shaped with raised tear drop moldings that can be seen from above. A single tang bolt passes through the stock to engage the triggerplate below. The barrel is retained to the forearm with the use of four small steel pins. The pins are surrounded by nickel silver half moon inlays that are engraved with a man-in-the moon face. Incised carving flows up from the ramrod entry pipes and runs the entire length of the ramrod channel just below the engraved moon inlays.

From below the engraved brass toeplate is shaped with a decorative finial and secured with two iron screws. Toeplates are intended to protect that delicate portion of the stock while loading and cleaning the gun, commonly in contact with the ground this area is subject to nicks and dings and a toeplate helps prevent that. The triggerguard is a very classic Golden Age style and is secured with pins. The wooden ramrod is held in place by two forward and one entry pipe decorated with bands. The ramrod is finished with a barber pole design, but does not have any tips for threaded accessories. A decorative brass muzzlecap has been installed on the rifle to protect the end grain of the wood at that position, much like the buttplate to the rear.

The brass sideplate is lightly engraved. Further back on the rifle an engraved nickel silver hunter's star has been set into the cheek. Raised and incised carving can be found flowing around the cheek. The cheek is accented with a piece of imitation ivory that is secured with small brass pins. The area behind the cheek is decorated with a carved scene that depicts a frontiersman holding a knife ready to scalp a fallen native warrior. The knife is an inlay of nickel silver and the warrior's tomahawk is made from a brass inlay.

The Dixie Ashmore flintlock has been browned to match the barrel. The lock works smoothly, with a crisp action. We recommend our 5/8" knapped flints, #FLINT-ENG-5. Fast ignition is assured by the bronze vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The single trigger, with decorative back, provides a smooth release of the lock.
