This is not a "gun" book nor is it a "history" book. It is an "art" book, more specifically, the art of the American Longrifle. Its intent is to illustrate in detail the architecture and decorative elements that make th American Longrifle such a unique and fascinating object. Yes, the longrifle is a gun, and it was sued for defense and to procure meat for the table. The longrifle did this better than any firearm before it. It mus said though, that because of their high quality and elaborate decoration (and associated cost), it's more than likely most of the rifles in this book were not used extensively for these purposes. Today we don't think of them as gun, but rather as beautiful, hand-sculptured and decorated works of early Americana, fashioned by self reliant, hard-working, God-fearing frontiersman.
