This correct Model 1733 French Dragoon pistol was hand assembled by master gun maker, Mr. Ron Scott. He has become famous for his strictly correct flint guns. Stocked in figured walnut, this pistol has the sleek lines and graceful balance of a fine original antique. Used, it has been fired several times, based on the few scratches on the frizzen, and the tight fit of the frizzen to barrel. The .62 caliber (20 gauge) bore is bright and has been well maintained. This pistol points very naturally, and weighs 2.5 pounds.

Unmarked, this well made Model 1733 French Dragoon pistol has a 12" tapered octagon-to-round .62 caliber smoothbore barrel, finished to a silvery gray. Notice how the octagon flat simply fades to round, without a wedding band at the transition. The bore measures .621" at the muzzle, and has been well maintained. A silver front sight is soldered directly behind the muzzle. A shallow groove filed in the top of the tang serves to help center the front sight when aiming.

This pistol is stocked in figured close grain European walnut finished to a golden brown, with honey gold undertones, and curls of figure that run the entire length of the stock. The stock has a few minor handling marks from use. The brass has aged to a dull mellow patina. The top view shows the rounded tang of the breech plug with a single bolt that passes through to engage the trigger plate below. Our bottom view shows the simple wooden ramrod, brass buttcap, and the elegant brass triggerguard with sculptured flats and decorative finial at front. The ramrod is not fitted with any threaded tips to accept cleaning or loading accessories. We recommend our #PL-8-62 to service this pistol. The lock panels are tapered, not parallel, slightly wider at the rear, giving this pistol its flowing grace. The wood swells very slightly wider as it nears the muzzle. A large brass sideplate is fitted to the side panel with two dome head bolts that pass through to engage the lock on the opposite side.

He teaches classes on building one-of-a-kind locks, using The Rifle Shoppe castings, assembled and tuned by hand. Trigger release is a pure delight, as expected on a gun of this quality. The vent is perfectly centered, well above the bottom of the pan, covered by the frizzen when closed. Sometimes called the sunset position, this correctly placed vent will serve as a window on the hottest area of your priming flash. Incandescent heat radiates through the hole, instantly firing the main charge, which is very close to the priming flash, due to the concave inside cavity of the vent liner. Flint guns have no whoosh-bang delay, when correctly vented, and when primed with only about one-third pan of FFFFg powder.

An ideal sidearm for a French & Indian War era re-enactor, or a Revolutionary War era re-enactor. Pistols of this quality are as difficult and costly to build as fine flint rifles.
