This replica of an late halfstock Hawken rifle was made by the famous Green River Rifle Works, Roosevelt, Utah. This factory finished rifle has a number of small handling marks in the finish typical of a used rifle. It also has a crack on the left hand side of the forearm that is very difficult under casual observation. The 1-1/8" octagon barrel and iron trim are finished to a dark brown. Trigger reach is just over 13-3/4" to fit a 5'10" or taller shooter. This halfstock plains rifle weighs 11.4 pounds, and balances just behind the rear sight.

The 1-1/8" octagon .54 caliber 33" barrel has a bright well maintained bore. Green River Rifle Works (GRRW) barrels were famous for accuracy, during the 1970 era of their production. Seven deep equal lands and grooves, and a nice interior bore finish, make Green River Rifle Works barrels very desirable to shooters. The barrel is marked GRRW Roosevelt Utah on the top flat of the barrel, ahead of the rear sight. The off flat of the breech is marked with the caliber and serial number in addition to the MC individual makers mark. Rifles by Green River Rifle Works are becoming collectible as Americana, as well as prized for their accuracy.

The chocolate brown finish of the octagon barrel, lock, and iron furniture has a few tiny handling marks from normal use, and some faint wear in the brown on areas that are frequently handled. The octagon corners are crisp and square. The fixed rear sight is a classic Hawken buckhorn sight. Drift it right or left in its dovetail, to correct windage. The fixed front sight is a silver blade in a copper base. Shorten the silver blade, to raise bullet impact to point of aim.

The crack on the left hand side of the forearm is 5" long. The repair is well fitted and it must be rolled in the light at just the right orientation to be visible. The long iron tang of the hooked breech strengthens the wrist. Sleek and slender, the maple stock has attractive figure over the length of the stock. The stain used on the stock has aged to a greenish tone, which is not unusual on GRRW Hawken. Two wedge keys retain the barrel. Made in early Hawken style, they are a bit more narrow than later keys used on halfstock rifles, and they resemble the narrow keys used on fullstock Hawken rifles. Remove the keys with thumb pressure, and withdraw the ramrod, before lifting the barrel from its mortise. A hooked breech allows easy cleaning, without wetting the stock. A 1/4-28 nipple, for #11 cap, is fitted to the hooked snail breech.

The traditional iron toeplate protects the toe, ending a beaver tail finial. The long trigger bar, anchored to the long tang with two tang bolts, supports and reinforces the wrist. A hard fall will probably not break this rifle, while you are hunting the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, many days by horseback and keel-boat from Sam Hawken's gun shop in Saint Louis. The forend is fitted with an Hawken style iron forend cap. The stock is fitted with an iron ramrod entry pipe. The snugly fitted tapered hickory ramrod is well finished, with a brass tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. The single lock bolt, and tear drop escutcheon around it, are classic features of a halfstock Hawken plains rifle, of the early era. The vast majority of the screw slots are aligned with the barrel, with the exception of the tang bolts which must have been removed and reinstalled at some point in the past. The beaver tail shaped cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this rifle.

Notice the late percussion lock by Ron Long, later Hawken percussion rifles were made with a square inside corner at front. The well tempered internal parts include a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and a fly detent to allow set triggers. Double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers. These nice triggers also appear to be the work of Ron Long, Denver, Colorado.
