This is a beautiful reproduction of the Smith & Wesson top-break revolver adopted by the U.S. Army in 1875. Originally built in cooperation with U.S. Cavalry officer Major George Schofield, the No. 3 was the third gun in a line of break-action revolvers. Favored by horse mounted troops in both the American Great Plains and the Central Asian Steppes, where it was chambered in .44 Russian and used by the Czar’s Cossack Cavalry, its top-break action was much easier to use on horseback than the other revolvers available at the time. With the hammer in the half-cock position the latch can be moved backwards allowing the barrel to tip forward. While executing this process the plunger in the center of the cylinder raises the spent cartridges from their chambers and allows them to be easily discarded, then new shells can be inserted. This was the feature that made the gun so popular in cavalry circles, it did not require single emptying and loading like the Colt revolvers, instead the entire cylinder could be dumped and reloaded at once.

Built by A. Uberti of Italy, this revolver is chambered in .45 Long Colt and has a 7” barrel. Rather than the traditional blue finish this revolver has a bright nickel plated finish. Only having seen limited use the gun is in excellent condition. The walnut grips appear as-new and are stamped with inspection marks on both grips. Our top view of the revolver shows the sighting groove of the long rib on top of the barrel. The front sight is a silver blade that is captured within this groove, the rear sight is a notch in the knurled latch of the action. At the rear the nickel plated hammer latch of the break action can be seen. No markings can be found anywhere on the upper portion of the revolver. The right side of the barrel is marked Taylors & Co. Winchester VA A. Uberti Italy.

The bottom of the Schofield revolver is marked in a few different locations. A U.S. appears on the strap of the revolver under the grips as does the serial number. Higher up on the gun a few other proof marks can be found but they are all small and out of the way, not detracting from the look of the gun. A final view of the gun shows it from the left side, it is here that the factory markings can be seen forward of the cylinder. The barrel is marked 45 COLT and below it the markings Schofield's Pats June 20th 71 Apr 22nd 72. can be seen. Only slightly used the cylinder has begun to develop a faint line at the rear from being turned. This is the only wear on the gun and it is in otherwise new condition. Note the inspector’s marks and date 1877 in the rear of the walnut grip, a nice addition to this classic reproduction revolver.
