14 gauge, 37" tapered round barrel,
walnut stock, brass, original flintlock

This antique English fowler appears to have been built circa 1813 to the mid 1830's. The lock is still the original flintlock and has not been altered as so many guns of this period. This fowler appears to have been made for trade as it has limited decoration and a bridleless lock, which is unusual for such a late lock. The fowler was a fullstock when original constructed and has been "sporterized" with the forearm cut back and brass ramrod pipes soldered directly to the barrel.

This half stock smoothbore features a 37" tapered round barrel. The barrel's 16 gauge smooth bore measures .693" diameter at the muzzle, the bore is dark with visible light pitting over the full length. It has some areas that you can feel with a cleaning patch, but it possible these could be scrubbed smooth. The barrel has a brass front sight mounted behind the muzzle. The breech end of the barrel is stamped with post-1813 Birmingham, England view and proof marks. The breech is also stamped London, which was a period mark of quality. The ghosted image where the front underlug was mounted is just faintly visible on the bottom of the barrel.

Stocked in straight grain European walnut the stock has a dark well handled appearance. The rear of the lock panel has a crack that is starting to develop from compressing against the lock plate. The stock has many scattered handling marks, dents, and dings. Trigger reach is 14", a little above average for many antique fowlers. Weight is 6.4 pounds. The comfortable flat buttplate is tastefully engraved with a potted plant design. The wrist is fitted with a brass thumbpiece. The lock panels taper widest to the rear in early flint long gun fashion. The tang has a filed groove, likely to act as a rudimentary rear sight with the bead front sight.

The slim lock panels, engraved brass triggerguard, and rounded toe are visible in the bottom view. The triggerguard has pointed finial engraved with a fox head. The triggerguard bow has a engraved starburst design. No entry pipe is fitted, or appears to have ever been fitted on this fowler. The brass ramrod pipes have been soldered directly onto the barrel, creating a dog leg to get the ramrod into the forearm. This alteration may have been done due to a cracked forend, or just to give the fowler a contemporary appearance in the mid 19th century, when many fowlers were halfstocks. The side panel has a brass washer style sideplate to secure the single lock bolt. The stock has developed a crack from the breech to the lock bolt from the wood compressing against the barrel as it has aged.

The circa 1820 era flintlock is in original flintlock and does not appear to have been altered or restored. The lock is a bridleless design, to simplify construction. The lock is decorated in the style of Ketland Trade Fowlers, which would have been contemporary, with an engraved design on the tail. The marking on the lock is very faded, but appears to read Redfern & Goddard. The lock does mechanically function and sparks.

A good example of an early 19th century flintlock fowler made for trade, that has been cut to a halfstock. The bore is dark, but it could be scrubbed bright.
