This lovely antique double barrel breech loading shotgun was built in the latter half of the 19th century by W. & C. Scott and Son of London. The shotgun is stocked in checkered European walnut that has a very worn appearance from handling. The shotgun is trimmed in steel furniture that has aged to a speckled gray patina. Well over 100 years in age this double gun is in very good condition. The walnut stock has the dents and dings associated with normal use, but no cracks or visible repairs can be found. With a weight of 8.4 pounds and trigger reaches of 12-3/4” and 13-3/4” this shotgun is designed for a shooter of average height.

This 10 gauge 2-7/8" chamber shotgun has 18-1/2” Damascus barrels that measure .780" at the muzzle. The barrels have been shortened at some point in time. The barrels and rib have a few light handling marks typical of a used shotgun of this age and the pattern of the Damascus is still faintly visible. The ribs between the barrels are solid with no loose solder, a brass bead front sight is located near the muzzles. Just ahead of the breeches the barrels are marked W. & C. SCOTT & SON [SPECIAL GRADE] MAKERS & PATENTEES. LONDON. The right hand muzzle has a flat dent along the lower edge of the muzzle, where it was likely dropped or banged against a hard surface. The condition of both bores of the gun is fair, frosted with some darker pitting, they are still quite shootable. The bottom of the barrels have British proof marks with the addition of 10B over 11M next to NOT FOR BALL (shortening the barrels has removed the choke).

Opening the gun forces the extractors upwards, raising the shells, spent or not, out of the chamber for the shooter to discard after a shot or pocket at the end of the day. The barrels and action have both aged to a silvery gray patina finish. The action does have some very slight side to side play. Forward of the comb the checking on the wrist has a very worn appearance. The action lever of the gun shows off the intricate engraving. The lever has been marked by the builders, W. & C. SCOTT & SON PATENT. The engraving continues forward of the breech onto the barrels.

The triggerplate and grip rail are nicely engraved. The serial number can be found here on the triggerguard, and corresponds with the barrels and forearm. In front of the action the checkered forearm can be seen. Only a few small areas of the wood are not checkered and the metal latch, centrally located, has been engraved like the front of the triggerplate. The stock is in the same condition on both sides and no cheek has been formed, combined with the fact that there is no cast off this makes the gun suitable for either left or right handed shooters.

In order to dismount the barrels one must simply pull down on the lever in the forearm, this action will spring the entire piece loose for removal. After that all that is need is for the action to be worked, the barrels can now continue to open and be easily slid off the frame. Below the forearm all of the appropriate proof marks can be found. The metal of the forearm itself still carries the original color case hardened finish in the area that sits against the barrels and is not commonly exposed.

The locks and action of the gun all work properly. Rebounding hammers sit in their position until cocked and fired at which point they “rebound” into their current position. Smoothly operating the action breaks properly, the extractors raising up the spent shells for the shooter to remove. Each lock is marked W. & C. Scott & Son and is engraved with scroll work and a hunting dog on the tail.
