Stocked in dense American black walnut, this classic North West Trade Gun has straight grain, selected for strength. Correctly fitted with traditional trade gun hardware, a mix of brass and iron, this 24 gauge smoothbore has a percussion conversion lock and would be appropriate for a late fur trade impression. Assembled by contemporary maker Dr. Gary White. Trigger reach is 14" and weight is 6.1 pounds.

The 33" barrel is tapered octagon, with a transition to sixteen flats, two wedding bands, and tapered round to the muzzle. The bore is .580" diameter, for our cast lead round ball and patch. We recommend our .550" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patches, lubricated with Ox-Yoke Wonder Lube, for easy loading. We offer 24 gauge (.58 caliber) wads, cards, and shot for wing shooting. Use only lead or bismuth shot in a muzzleloading smoothbore. A brass "spider" style front sight is soldered behind the muzzle. The quarter flat of the barrel is marked by the maker with a GBW stamp. Additional markings include a daisy over a TB, the inspection mark of Thomas Barnett, GRRW, oval with CA, and NW02. The tapered octagon-to-round barrel finished bright and with regular use would age to a silvery gray patina.

The long ballister wrist runs from the lock panels to the toe, and the comb seems to sit on top of the flowing wrist. This is classic architecture for early English muskets, especially the early Sea Service muskets, which apparently served as a model for the North West Trade Gun. The design is simple and functional, and these inexpensive guns were imported and sold by the Fur Trade Companies, for many decades. Flint and percussion trade guns were still popular long after the metallic cartridge arrived, due to the low cost of ammunition for muzzle loading guns.

This bottom view shows the traditional large iron triggerguard, hand finished and burnished bright to match the barrel. The triggerguard of this North West Trade Gun is correctly surface mounted. Two screws retain the rear of the triggerguard, which a single screw mounts the front. This Trade Gun uses a triggerplate as well as a top down tang bolt, which are features found on some trade guns. No ramrod entry pipe is fitted, another correct feature. The two forward pipes are thin brass, with embossed grooves, much like the corrugations in cardboard, to give the pipes maximum strength against crushing or denting in hard use. The pipes allow the tapered ramrod to slide smoothly, to serve the barrel. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass tip to seat wads and cards. The ramrod does not have any provisions for threaded accessories.

This large round faced flintlock, by Mr. Jim Chambers , has been converted to percussion by removing the pan, frizzen, frizzen spring, and filling the holes. The lock plate was notched for the drum and nipple and a percussion hammer was fitted to the tumbler. The single trigger is pinned high to provide a light crisp trigger release.

Two lock bolts screws retain the sideplate and lock. The rear sideplate screw is actually a matching wood screw. The brass sideplate is cast in the form of a serpent, a traditional motif for the North West Gun. Unlike surface mounted sideplates, this serpent is inlet flush with the side panel. We believe that this stylized serpent sideplate evolved from the flat sideplates, embossed or engraved to resemble a serpent, found on Queen Anne and later English Sea Service muskets.
