An 1840-1860 vintage Ohio halfstock rifle, in the style of John and Caleb Vincent, signed by talented gunsmith John F. Bergmann. This rifle is used, but in well maintained condition with a bright bore. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit an average size shooter. Weight is 7.8 pounds.

The 36" length, 7/8" octagon .40 caliber cut rifled and hand lapped barrel, by NMLRA record holder James Goodoien, makes it perfect for offhand target shooting. A serious student of the best rifle barrel makers of yesterday and today, Jim focused his efforts on creating the best rifle barrels for his fellow shooters. Starting with selected round steel stock, Jim drills holes that are nearly perfectly straight. Bores are reamed to a mirror finish, using special reamers made in his shop. Rifling grooves are slowly cut in many passes, until correct depth. Outside flats are milled octagon to insure that the bore is perfectly concentric. The bores are hand lapped, with extra attention paid to the muzzle. The top flat of the barrel is engraved with the maker's name J.F. Bergmann and the left oblique flat is stamped .40 near the breech. The barrel is finished to a deep chocolate brown and does show a few bright spots from normal use. A silver blade in a brass base is dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle. A flat-top rear sight is dovetailed 10-1/2" ahead of the breech.

The figured maple stock has been stained to best reveal the stripe and figure. The dark stain with golden undertones combine to make this rifle very appealing to the eye. A poured and lightly engraved pewter cap protects the forend, exactly as on original Vincent rifles. The square cheek is inlaid with a silver star. Engraved nickel silver scrolls surround the barrel wedge key. The deep crescent brass buttplate is engraved along the comb. The deep curved buttplate is comfortable to hold and engages your shoulder with surprising comfort. These are correct features, all commonly found on collectible original antique Vincent rifles.

The brass entry pipe retains the 5/16" diameter ramrod that is fitted with a brass tip to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. We note that the ramrod extends 1/4" past the muzzle. The entry pipe has octagon flats, and the skirt tapers to a point. Two matching ramrod pipes are soldered to the barrel's under rib. This appearance is almost a Vincent signature. Mr. Bergmann has captured the slim grace and feel of the original Vincent rifles. These were not thick or clumsy, but were simple and elegant.

Viewed from the top, this slim rifle features of the comb can be seen and makes the architecture flow smoothly. The nickel silver thumb piece with engraved border is waiting for the proud owners initials. A single lock bolt passes through the lightly engraved straight pointed tang. The rifle has the appearance of having a hooked breech, but we were unable to dismount the barrel. The breech could possibly be screwed to the tang for target shooting. The bottom view shows the engraved brass toeplate which protects the critical toe area during loading. The brass triggerguard is also lightly engraved. The triggerguard bow has a finger spur, and the rear of the grip rail has a curled spoon. All of the brass has dulled to a pleasing mellow patina.

Our classic Goulcher lock plate has been polished and hand engraved with a simple border. This R. E. Davis lock is marked Goulcher in a banner. The hammer is lightly cast engraved and finished a deep chocolate brown to match the barrel. The cap's flash can damage the thin wood around the top of the lock panel behind the hammer, evidence of this is found on many original rifles. This rifle has a pewter plate installed to protect the stock from the cap flash. The nipple is also surrounded by a brass flash cup to provide additional protection to the lock panel from the cap's flash. Nearly all Vincent rifles we have seen included such a flash cup. You can add this feature to any rifle using a conventional powder drum. Vincent rifles seem to require a flash cup around the nipple. The drum and nipple are well supported by the lock plate, critical on this style of ignition. We note that there is a cosmetic chip at the tail of the lock panel, likely lifted when the lock was removed at some point. The lock is retained by a single bolt that passes through a classic Vincent engraved brass sideplate.

The Davis double lever double set triggers are properly adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You may set the triggers before, or after cocking the lock. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Although light weight, recoil is never a problem in a .40 caliber rifle. This halfstock Vincent rifle will be a joy to shoot! Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
