This half-stock Hawken rifle was originally constructed from a kit by the now defunct Sharon Rifle Barrel Company by Hoot Gibson in 1975. Nicely fit and finished this lovely rifle is assembled on a piece of maple that has been stained very dark, trimmed in browned iron furniture, decorated with small brass tacks, and fitted with a pewter forend cap. This rifle comes with two Sharon barrels that can be interchanged on the stock. The barrel shown on the rifle is .54 caliber and a shorter .50 caliber barrel is also included. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" and the weight of the rifle with the .54 caliber barrel installed is 9.6 pounds. With the shorter .50 caliber barrel, the weight is 9.0 pounds.

The .54 caliber straight octagon barrel measures 32" in overall length and the barrel is 1" across from flat to flat. The .50 caliber straight octagon barrel measures 27-1/2" in overall length and the barrel is also 1" across from flat to flat. Both barrels are finished a dark textured chocolate brown with bright spots around the edges from years of use and cleaning. The bores are both bright and well cared for. Cut rifled, these barrels are American made with eight equal lands and grooves, with slow rifling twist, for patched round ball. Both barrel use an iron blade sight dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzles. The back of the front sights have been painted orange for better visibility in low light. Both barrels use the same Sharon buckhorn rear sight that has been ground flat across the top. This sight is installed 9-3/4" ahead of the breech on the .54 caliber barrel and 8-3/4" ahead of the breech on the .50 caliber barrel. A steel nipple is installed on the .54 caliber barrel. The .50 caliber barrel does not have a nipple, however it can be switched between barrels.

Stocked in a piece of maple, the wood has been stained to a very dark brown and shows light spots from many years of handling. The stock also has many dings and pressure dents from field use. Small brass tacks tastefully decorate the stock at the tip of the toeplate, trigger plate, entry pipe, and around the escutcheon plates. The buttplate has a modest curve to engage the shoulder in mid 19th century style. The iron furniture is finished to a textured dark brown. The triggerguard is a late Hawken design with a wide bow for the double set triggers and offset curled grip rail.

The top view of the rifle shows off the tapered comb, slender wrist and octagon barrel of the rifle. Sloping up to the hooked breech of the barrel, the wrist is dominated by the long tang that hooks into the breech plug. The tang is held in place by two bolts that pass through the stock to engage the triggerplate below. This has the effect of sandwiching the wrist and adding and extra level of reinforcement. This extra strength is what made these rifles so popular on the Great Plains and in the Rocky Mountains, a hard fall would leave the rifle undamaged whereas other guns would easily break through the wrist. The hooked breech allows for easy cleaning, remove the ramrod and two wedge keys, and the barrel easily lifts out of the stock. The bottom of the barrel channel is signed Hoot Gibson 1975. Further back on the rifle is the classic beaver tail style cheek that helps to angle the recoil of this large caliber rifle away from the shooters face, while providing a comfortable platform from which to align the sights.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows off the long iron toeplate and trigger bar. The toeplate of the rifle is held in position by two screws and protects the delicate toe of the rifle from damage incured while loading and cleaning. The toeplate is decorated with a notch and dot design around its perimeter. The end of the forearm is fitted with a poured pewter nose cap. The ramrod passes through a browned entry pipe. Two ramrod pipes are installed on the longer .54 caliber barrel. The shorter .50 caliber barrel only uses one ramrod pipe. Both barrels come with a wooden ramrods that are 3/8" diameter. Both are fitted with brass tips to accept 8-32 loading and cleaning accessories. The ramrods are both 1-1/4" short of the muzzle, because a loading jag is installed to make them flush with the muzzle, as can be seen in the picture with the .54 caliber barrel installed. The jag for the .50 caliber barrel is missing.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this L&R percussion lock. The mid 1800's styled lock is browned dark to match the barrel and furniture. The brown finish shows a few handling marks in the finish from use. Internally the lock is fitted with the later production L&R parts. The lock is properly tuned to provide fast lock time and positive action. A single lock bolt passes through a late Hawken sideplate to engage the lock on the opposite side.

Below the lock a set of L&R double lever, double set Hawken triggers are installed on the rifle. Properly tuned and adjusted the triggers can be set and fired in any sequence. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
