This replica Dutch smoothbore fowling gun was created by Leonard Day, copied from an original Dutch gun, which was excavated from an Iroquois burial site. We don't see many Dutch style Club Butt fowling guns. This one is offered in new condition. Weight is 7.9 pounds and the trigger reach is 14-1/2" making the gun well suited for today's taller shooter.

The 42" tapered octagon-to-round fowling gun barrel is 20 gauge, or .62 caliber smoothbore barrel. The octagon-to-round barrel geometry reduces weight. The barrel is polished bright on the exterior, and the bore is bright and ready to shoot. The front sight is a brass blade soldered 2" behind the muzzle. No rear sight is installed and the barrel is unmarked, the way serious reenactors prefer.

The walnut stock is oil finished. The club butt style stock is slim, graceful, and elegant. The oil finish is rubbed to a sleek satin smoothness, and the grain of the wood can be seen through the finish. The long curved baluster wrist supports the large formed comb, in early Dutch style. This stock shape is very appropriate for an early Dutch settler in the New York area, and the fur traders and Indians who traded with the Dutch. There is also evidence of these guns being used as far west as Illinois. This particular gun is made from parts copied by Leonard Day from an original Dutch gun, which was excavated from an Iroquois burial site.

Trimmed in iron, this a unique piece. All of the iron is polished bright and will acquire a natural patina from handling and use. The buttplate is sheet iron correctly secured with round head nails. The tang bolt extends up from the bottom of the stock into the tang, similar to later North West Trade Guns. The toe of the butt is finished with an octagonal theme, when viewed from below. The triggerguard is hand formed from sheet iron, and secured with two steel screws. The 3/8" ramrod passes through two iron ramrod pipes. A steel loading tip is installed on the muzzle end. A brass tip with cover is installed on the opposite end and is threaded 8-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories.

The flat faced early Dutch lock, by Leonard Day, has been finished bright to match the barrel. The frizzen face has a few scratches from test sparking, the area around the vent shows no wear from use. The lock is fitted with a heavy mainspring, to provide a shower of sparks, and the frizzen snaps open smartly when fired. The lock has a dog catch, an additional safety feature found on some early locks. Three small brass four petal flower shaped sideplates support the lock bolts. The large trigger is pinned high, for a very smooth release, light and crisp.

A conventional drilled vent is perfectly centered over the pan, positioned slightly above the pan's center, to serve as a window to admit the intense light and heat of the incandescent flash of the priming. The old gunmakers were masters. They understood practical physics, and we can learn much from them.

When you examine this gun in detail, you will discover a very simple, trim, and elegant fowling gun, with a distinctive early Dutch theme. Made with no extra decoration, this gun depicts a typical early Dutch export musket, made for trade in the American colonies. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
