Stocked in maple, stained medium brown, this French Type C fine fusil is correctly trimmed in brass, with engraved decorative finials on most of the brass furniture. French fur traders introduced the Type C fusil to Canada as early as 1680. It was the standard French trade gun, until replaced by the simpler Type D fusil about 1730. No two Type C fusils were exactly alike. Two styles were made: the fusil ordinaire was not decorated, and the fusil fin had engraving cast into the buttplate comb and triggerguard finials. This decorated version would be typical of a fusil fin. This fowling piece by contemporary gun maker Robert Raddis is signed on the top barrel flat. The trigger reach is 14", to comfortably fit today's average size shooter. This French fowler weighs 7.9 pounds.

The tapered octagon-to-round 42" barrel is 20 gauge, with a wedding band at the transition from octagon to round. The bore measures .620" diameter, a true 20 gauge. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. We recommend our .600" round balls, and .010" Ox-Yoke patches, lubed with Ox-Yoke Wonder Lube for easy loading. Use the new non-toxic bismuth bird shot for waterfowl, and be sure to carry the bismuth label or receipt, since a game warden cannot identify bismuth with a magnet. Use conventional lead shot for upland game. Order our 20 gauge wads and cards, too. The barrel is finished to a French gray and is signed on the top flat R. J. Faddis near the breech. A silver blade front sight is soldered 2-1/4" behind the muzzle. No rear sight is fitted to the barrel. This smoothbore 20 gauge gun will qualify for the new N.M.L.R.A. Trade Gun Match, where you fire patched round balls at paper targets, and shot at clay birds, using the same flint smoothbore gun.

Stocked in maple, the stock is in very good condition, with a few slight handling marks. The Type C brass buttplate has a long elaborate comb with cast in leaf engraving. As the comb comes to a head, it transitions into the wrist with a raised carved leaf design that extends back into the buttstock highlighting the comb with incised lines. The brass thumbpiece inlay is of a grotesque mask and is set flush with the wrist. The breech plug is decorated with a band design and the straight tang has a thumbnail finial. The tang is surrounded by a raised leaf carving. The single tang bolt is neatly indexed and passes through to engage the trigger plate below.

From below the rounded toe of the fusil can be seen. Normally an area of the stock that suffers from the rigors of use, this particular stock toe shows none of the typical signs of such handling, no dents or dings are visible anywhere along the base of the gun. Moving forward on the fusil the brass triggerguard comes into view. Neatly finished the brass guard is partially inlet into the stock. Pinned into position, as is traditional, the guard still has its original cast in engraving on the forward finial in a leaf design. Raised carving highlights the trigger guard around its perimeter.

The lock panels are slim and the rear portion ends with a raised leaf design to match the rest of the carving. Incised lines extend forward into the forearm from the raised beaver tail carving around the front of the lock panels. The pointed brass skirt of the ramrod entry pipe is surrounded by the same raised leaf carving that transitions into an incised molding line extending all the way down the forearm, along the ramrod channel, before coming to a point just before the brass muzzle cap. A 3/8" diameter wood ramrod passes through two brass ramrod pipes. The last 3" of the ramrod flares wider and the end is concaved to help load a round ball without deforming it. No tips are installed on the ramrod to accommodate loading and cleaning accessories. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to service this gun.

Notice the early style flint lock, by Larry Zornes, with no pan bridle arm. The frizzen is supported by the shouldered frizzen pivot screw. The banana shaped flint lock plate has a chamfer along each edge, and a fleur-de-lis on the frizzen spring. The flint lock has a very strong mainspring. The frizzen face is marked from spark testing and firing. The lock is finished to the same French gray to match the barrel. The border of the plate and cock are lightly engraved. Below the lock the single trigger has been properly pinned to give good leverage against the sear. Not pinned so high that it will overpower the half cock position, the trigger is perfectly set to crisply break at about the 4 pound mark.

Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel White Lightnin' vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The brass sideplate is an elegant French design, often found on Type C fusils. The term "Type C" was invented by Hamilton, used in his book Colonial Frontier Guns, sold separately. It has many nice photos of a fine original French Type C trade gun. Perhaps we will learn the correct French name for this style of early trade gun, in the future.

If you are in search of a nice Type C fusil, then this gun may be the one for you. Neatly stocked in maple and trimmed in brass furniture, the 20 gauge trade gun is very well done and in excellent overall condition. Perfect for 18th century reenactors or living historians, this Type C fusil will also be at home in the woods during the fall hunts. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
