This classic North West Blanket Gun, also commonly known as a pony or canoe gun, is stocked in straight grain cherry. The barrel is finished to a matte brown, and the stock is ornamented with brass tacks on the lock panels, forearm, and short buttstock. Historically modified from a full length Trade Gun, a firearm such as this was designed to be easily carried or concealed. Correctly fitted with traditional trade gun hardware, this 20 gauge smooth bore flint fowling gun is as pretty as it is functional. Assembled by contemporary gun maker Dr. Gary White

The 16" barrel is tapered octagon- to-round at the muzzle. The octagon breech transitions to sixteen flats to a double wedding band. The bore is .625" diameter, for our cast lead round ball and patch. We recommend our .595" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patches, lubricated with Ox-Yoke Wonder Lube, for easy loading. We offer 19 gauge wads, cards, and shot. The bore is bright in as-new condition. .The breech end of the barrel is stamped with a London mark, a period mark of quality. The quarter flat is stamped with a Daisy over TB mark of Thomas Barnett. It also has makers marks of GRRW, CA, NW003, and GBH.

Stocked in cherry, which is the softest of the hard woods commonly used on firearms it will pick up small handling marks faster than maple or walnut. Just past the wrist the stock is cross drilled and fitted with a leather thong fitted with beads and horse hair. The stock is decorated with brass tacks around the thong hole in the stock, as well as on the lock panels and forearm. The traditional large iron triggerguard is finished bright. The triggerguard of this North West Blanket Gun is correctly surface mounted. The ramrod is fitted with a flared 20 gauge brass tip for seating wads and cards. The ramrod has no provisions for threaded accessories. Two lock bolts and a third screw retain the sideplate and lock. The brass sideplate is cast in the form of a serpent, a traditional motif for the North West Gun. We believe that this stylized serpent sideplate evolved from the flat sideplates, embossed or engraved to resemble a serpent, found on Queen Anne and later English Sea Service muskets.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this R.E. Davis round faced flint lock. Locks of this design are commonly found on English or American longrifles and fowlers of the 1730 - 1770 era. The plate, cock, and other surfaces of original Queen Anne locks were often polished to a bright finish. This lock has been polished, and engraved in a traditional design then finished to a deep blue-black to match the barrel. This nicely made flint lock has good internals. A heavy mainspring combines with a well hardened frizzen to produce a shower of sparks. The trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear. An essential element for fast ignition, the vent liner is well centered on the pan, correctly positioned above the bottom of the pan, to serve as a window, centered on the heat of the incandescent flash.

This North West Blanket Gun is as-new unfired. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
