This classic American flint longrifle captures the style of one of the best Lancaster County gun makers. Modeled after the work of Jacob Dickert, it is stocked in curly maple and trimmed in brass furniture. Arriving from Germany to America about 1750, he studied under an unknown master, learning the gunmaker's art. He worked in Lancaster County from 1769 until his death in the early 1820's. He was an artist, producing decorated relief carved flint longrifles for his many customers. He also produced rifles for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. This longrifle features well fitted parts, with a hand engraved daisy head patchbox, and cleanly executed raised and incised carving. Signed by contemporary builder John Latoche on the top flat of the barrel. Weighing 8 pounds, the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-1/2" making it well suited for today's average size shooter.

The .40 caliber Colerain swamped barrel gives this rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. The swamped profile is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. The .40 caliber bore is cut rifled with six deep round bottom grooves and a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The "radius groove rifling", eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. We recommend our .395" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with Mink Oil grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy for target shooting. The barrel is finished with a dark matte brown finish. The flat top rear sight is mounted 12" from the breech. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with a silver base that is mounted 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The top flat is signed J Latoche 2018.

This attractive flint fullstock longrifle is trimmed in brass, which has been finished to a dark patina to simulate years of use and handling. The buttplate is wide, flat, and comfortable. It engages your shoulder to minimize the modest recoil of this .40 caliber rifle. The maple stock is stained to a dark brown and finished to a satin sheen. A line of raised carving defines the transition from wrist to comb. A incised molding from the toe to the triggerguard creates a slimming effect.

This patchbox is patterned after a rifle signed by Lancaster County maker Jacob Dickert late in his carrier. Mounted with correct unplated iron screws, the patchbox door has button latch just ahead of the heel of the buttplate. A deep correctly cut patchbox cavity is hidden under the slightly domed brass patchbox lid. When closing the patchbox door it prefers pressure from the upper portion of the door to secure it in the spring.

Our top view of this Lancaster County rifle shows the wide buttplate tapering into the comb. Look closely, and you may notice that the buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather, it is offset from the right hand shooter's cheek. This feature is called cast-off, and it places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this gun instinctive point and shoot, for a right hand shooter. The cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. The slender wrist is fitted with a silver thumbpiece engraved with a decorative border. The stock is decorated with a raised and incised carved Fluer de Lys around the flared thumbnail tang of the breech plug. All of the carving is crisp with smooth clean lines. The forearm and forend have a slender profile that just wrap the barrel to the muzzle.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows off the brass toeplate and triggerguard. In addition to its decorative factor the toeplate adds a level of protection to the wood, the toe commonly comes into contact with the ground when loading and cleaning and the toeplate helps protect it at these times.Moving forward on the stock the brass triggerguard is pinned into position. The triggerguard is nicely shaped with crisp flats and filed molding behind the bow. The molding around the lock panel is accented with incised carving.

The wooden ramrod is held in place by three brass pipes, one entry and two forward. A raised carved Fluer de Lys around the ramrod entry pipe transitions into a incised molding along the ramrod channel. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The ramrod is fitted with a 10-32 brass tip for loading and cleaning accessories. A backside view of the rifle shows off the large brass square tailed Lancaster County sideplate that has been used on the rifle. Further back on the gun the classic squared cheek can be seen, providing the shooter with a comfortable platform to align their sights. The cheek has been accented with raised and incised carving. All of the carving is well done with clean lines and smooth backgrounds, the work of a skilled hand with sharp tools.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this Jim Chambers' Siler flint lock. The expertly assembled lock has a heavy mainspring and good internals, it is properly tuned to work perfectly. We recommend our 3/4" English gun flints for use with this lock, our #FLINT-ENG-6. The lock is finished a dark brown to match the barrel. The single trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear.
