This fine trade rifle by contemporary maker James Hanchett is styled after the Lancaster County Pennsylvania rifles made for the Indian fur trade in the 1840's. You can find examples of the antique rifles showcased in the book For Trade and Treaty. Not a copy of a specific rifle, similarly styled rifles were made by the Gumpf family of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for the American Fur Company, private fur traders and the commercial market. This .50 caliber longrifle would make a great hunting rifle and is appropriate for many frontier and native historical portrayals. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8.7 pounds.

The heart of the rifle is a 42" by 7/8" straight octagon .50 caliber Green Mountain barrel. The cut rifled barrel has eight equal lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist for a tightly patched round ball. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The straight 7/8" octagon .50 caliber barrel gives the rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. The browned barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 9-1/2" ahead of the breech and a silver blade front sight with copper base is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The top flat of the barrel near the rear sight is stamped with the maker's initials 'JH' and the year '2017'. The barrel is retained to the stock with three steel wedge keys.

The curly maple Lancaster-style stock has an oiled finish and a decorative checkered wrist similar in design to the pattern found on antique 1840's era trade rifles. The 8" long brass patch box is shaped with an acorn finial head and is hand engraved with a sure hand in a traditional style that looks very appropriate on this rifle. The engraving is unshaded, we find that after a day a shooting rubbing a used cleaning patch over engraving will slowly shade the engraving and give the brass a mellow aged patina. The lid is opened by depressing a domed brass button set into the toe plate. The patch box works very well and has a secure latch.

Our top view shows the profile of the classic Lancaster stock. The brass butt plate comb is filed with five flats and a has a wedding band transition to the stock. The cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. A silver oval wrist inlay with hand engraved border is fitted. The checkering on the wrist ends at the base of the tapered tang breech plug.

The rifle's brass work is polished to a matte finish to help reduce glare. As-new the brass will acquire a mellow patina with use and handling. The 6" long brass toe plate is hand engraved and retained by two blued steel wood screws. The domed brass button releases the patch box door. The brass trigger guard is correctly pinned to the stock. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the forearm. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is mounted through round ramrod pipes with ringed ends. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by a Jim Chambers' large Siler flint lock. This lock captures the styling used on many American longrifles. Most flint locks were imported from England or Europe, for use by American gunmakers. Finished brown, the lock matches the barrel nicely. The lock plate stands well above the wood panel, and is chamfered along each edge, creating the shadow line around the lock plate. The hammer and plate is lightly engraved.

Double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel White Lightnin' vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The lock panels are very trim and neatly shaped to give this rifle a slender profile. The brass side plate is a classical early 19th century Lancaster County style. The lock is retained by two steel lock bolts. The maple stock has a square cheek piece adorned with an engraved silver star inlay. Raised C-scroll carving decorates the area behind the cheekpiece. The gently curved buttplate comfortably engages the shooter's shoulder.
