This attractive early Colonial era longrifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in brass furniture. The rifle has a Germanic influence with a swamped octagon barrel, and Chamber's flint lock with "banana" shaped lock plate. Rifles of this style are typical of rifles produced in or near Christian's Spring, Pennsylvania, during the mid 1700's. The maple stock is stained to a warm brown and fitted with a sliding wood patchbox, sling button and swivel. Neatly assembled by contemporary maker Greg Park. The trigger reach is 13" and the weight is 8.0 pounds.

The .62 caliber swamped octagon Colerain barrel has a 31" length. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. Cut rifled the bore has six lands and radius grooves with a 1 in 66" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright, clean, and has been well maintained. The muzzle is decorated with a deep rose crown design. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled .012" to .016" deep depending on caliber, with six “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. A silver blade front sight set is a brass base is dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 7-3/4" ahead of the breech. The barrel is finished to a smooth brown and signed G A Park behind the rear sight.

The stock is finished to a warm brown and has only a few very minor handling marks. This buttstock shape, with a slight step or angle at the lower wrist, is often seen on Jaeger rifles from Germany, an early feature also found on American flint longrifles that evolved over a few decades. An incised molding line runs down from the toe to the stepped wrist. The sliding wooden patchbox that has been installed on the butt is shaped with thumb relief at the base and an incised border around the perimeter. The door is easily removed by compressing the latch toward the lid and sliding the door toward the buttplate.

More German influence is apparent in the overall size and shape of the butt of the rifle. The wide, nearly flat buttplate will help to spread the felt recoil from the .62 caliber bore. The buttplate is shaped with five flats and a wedding band. The comb of the buttplate is hand engraved with a decorative scroll design around the screw. Raised scroll engraving surrounds the flared tang. A single tang bolt passes through the tang and stock to engage the trigger plate below. The bottom view shows the width of the comfortable buttplate. No toeplate has been installed on this rifle. The toe of the rifle has a sling swivel button, we note a small crack extending from the mounting hole for the button. The forward swivel is mounted through the forearm just ahead of the middle ramrod pipe so it correctly rests against the pipe. The Germanic style triggerguard flares wide through the bow and is correctly mounted with a screw at the rear and pin up front. The front of the triggerguard has been hand engraved with a decorative border and scroll designs.

Incised molding flows from the brass entry pipe along the length of the forearm. The brass ramrod pipes support the tapered 3/8" diameter ramrod fitted with an iron tip with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. A brass muzzle cap has been installed to protect the end grain of the stock. The left side view shows the raised and incised carving that flows into the front of the square cheek with molded edge. To the rear of the cheek the stock is decorated with raised and incised carved scrolls. Two small rings have been installed under the cheek to secure a vent pick. Further up on the stock, the lock panels are shaped with a raised molding along the edges. The brass sideplate fills the side panel in Germanic fashion. The sideplate is neatly hand engraved and polished bright. Two domed lock bolts engage the lock on the opposite side.

Ignition is sure-fire, provided by this large Germanic style flint lock by Jim Chambers. Notice the early style frizzen pivot screw, a stud mounted without a pan bridle. The fancy flash pan has an octagon shape, surrounded by a molding below, as it joins the plate. This flint lock is fast, with a strong mainspring, and it sparks well. Order a dozen of our best English #Flint-ENG-7 gun flints, 7/8" size, by Tom Fuller, for best sparks. The single trigger is pinned high for a smooth release. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Neatly fit and finished this Christian's Spring style flint longrifle is a wonderful example of Germanic influenced early American longrifles.
