This classic American flint longrifle is made in the style of the best Lancaster County, Pennsylvania gun makers, such as Jacob Dickert. The rifle is a interpretation of the Dickert pieces shown in the book Rifles of Colonial America, Volume 1 by Dr. George Shumway. Dickert's original work, and this rifle as a result, is thought to have been influenced by the Moravian gun shop at Christian Spring and the shops master, Andreas Albrecht whose work also appears in Mr. Shumway's book. This nicely made longrifle is signed J. Latoche on the top flat of the barrel. This rifle is as new, unfired. With an overall weight of 8.1 pounds and a trigger reach of 13-1/2" to fit todays shorter to average size shooter well.

The Colerain Barrel Company .50 caliber 42" swamped octagon rifle barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist to reduce weight, and flares at the muzzle to align the sights. The swamped barrel gives the rifle a nice balance without being overly muzzle heavy. Deep grooves and a slow 1 in 56" twist rifling are ideal for accuracy with a tightly patched round ball. Cut rifled with radius groove rifling, to make cleaning easy. We recommend our .490" Hornady round ball, a .018" pillow ticking patch, lubed with our Mink Oil tallow. The front sight is a nickel silver blade, mounted 2" behind the muzzle. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 12-1/2" from the breech. Older eyes often find this extra distance from the breech very desirable, as it brings the sights into focus more easily.

The curly maple stock of this long rifle is figured with random stripes from the butt to the muzzle. The stock is stained to brown with golden undertone commonly found on longrifles from the Lancaster County region of Pennsylvania. The buttstock has the classic angular lines associated with Lancaster County makers. A line of raised carving defines the transition from comb to wrist. The raised and incised carving on the rifle is excellent with crisp lines and clean backgrounds. An incised molding from the toe to the triggerguard creates a slimming effect.

The classic daisy head patchbox was used by Jacob Dickert, as well as other Lancaster County makers. The brass patchbox is hand engraved on the head, door, and side panels. The engraving is cut with very fine lines and shaded for contrast. The burnished finish with dark patina matches the rest of the brass furniture. Correct steel screws are used to mount the brass patchbox and hardware. The patchbox release button is located just ahead of the heel of the buttplate. The patchbox snaps open and closes tightly. A deep correctly cut patchbox cavity is hidden under the brass patchbox lid.

The buttplate is well fitted, and has the screw neatly aligned with the barrel. The early wide buttplate has a pleasant curve, comfortable to aim, it engages your shoulder to minimize recoil. The square cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. A large raised and incised carved shell design surrounds the flared tang of the breech plug. The single tang bolt is neatly fitted with the slot aligned with the barrel. The barrel is finished to a silvery gray that nicely contrasts the color used on the stock. The barrel is signed John P. Latoche 2018 between the breech and rear sight.

The toe has a long brass toeplate with a hand engraved border. The triggerguard has a wide bow and offset grip rail with curled spoon. The triggerguard has a satin burnished patina finish with crisp flats only hand polishing can produce. The lock panels are framed by a raised and incised carved molding. The ramrod pipes are octagon with raised rings on the ends for strength. The tapered ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. We would highly recommend using a dedicated cleaning ramrod and leaving this well fitted ramrod with the rifle. The side view shows the polished brass sideplate, and combination of raised incised carving that decorates the area ahead of, and behind the cheek. The carving is excellent with clean smooth backgrounds. The carving is accented with a few areas of silver wire inlay, all appear to be well fitted with smooth curves.

Ignition is provided by this large Siler flint lock, by Jim Chambers. Finished to a silvery gray the finish nicely compliments the golden brown tone of the stock, and patina finished burnished brass furniture. The lock plate has a hand forged appearance and fits perfectly with the rest of the rifle. Tuned for best performance, this lock is fitted with a heavy mainspring, for fast lock time and best sparking. Order a few of our 3/4" English gun flints, too. The frizzen shows only a few marks from spark testing. The single trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear.

A stainless steel vent liner is well centered on the pan of the lock. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

This Lancaster County longrifle, signed by contemporary builder John Latoche, is neatly fitted and finished. Stocked in curly maple, the .50 caliber Colerain swamped barrel is in new condition with a bright clean bore. This fine rifle will be at home at the range, or in the field.
