This early American longrifle would be typical of the early transitional longrifles produced by German immigrants. Stocked in maple the wood has been stained an amber brown to highlight the contrasting stripes. The Green Mountain barrel and R.E. Davis flintlock are finished to a dark blue with a light patina finish. The rifle is used with a few minor handling marks on the stock and patina on the brass. With an overall weight of 9.8 pounds and a trigger reach of 14” for today's average size shooter.

The Green Mountain .50 caliber 36" barrel is 15/16" straight octagon. The .50 caliber bore is rifled with eight equal lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist for a tightly patched round ball. We recommend our .490" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patching, lubricated with our Mink Oil tallow patch grease, if you require best accuracy. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The rear sight itself is dovetailed 8-1/2” ahead of the breech and is matched at the muzzle by a square blade iron front sight that sits 1-1/4” back from the muzzle of the barrel. The face of the sight has been brightened with white paint. The barrel finish has an aged patina with the edges worn bright.

Stocked in figured maple, the wood has randomly spaced contrasting stripes of figure. The amber brown color is finished with a satin finish. The Germanic profile of the buttstock is shaped with a step at the wrist. The wide early buttplate, it is designed to spread the felt recoil over a large area, making the rifle comfortable to shoot. The brass buttplate is shaped with broad flats with a wedding band transition to the comb. A line of incised carving defines the transition from the comb to the wrist.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows the brass triggerguard that has been mounted with a combination of screws and pins in early longrifle fashion. Forward the ramrod is retained by two forward pipes and one entry pipe, securing the 3/8" wooden ramrod in position. An brass muzzlecap has also been installed on the rifle to protect the end grain of the wood beneath the muzzle. The tapered ramrod has an brass tip that is treaded 8-32 to accept your loading and cleaning attachments. The brass sideplate has a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania influence. Held in position by two lock bolts that pass through the stock to engage the lock on the opposite side, the plate is finished to match the other brass furniture on the rifle. The cheek of the gun protrudes ever so slightly from the butt, uncarved and unengraved it is simple yet elegant.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by this R.E. Davis Germanic flint lock. Finished to a dark brown with a gray patina finish along the edges. Notice that the pan has no bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw. Instead, a massive shouldered pivot screw supports the frizzen, which tightly fits the pan. This is the so-called “banana” lock plate design, because the plate curves gracefully. Such architecture made the lock flow with the lock panels toward the wrist. Later locks tend to be more straight. We recommend our 7/8" knapped English flints for use with this lock.

The double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

In excellent condition this early transitional longrifle will be a joy to own and shoot. The .50 caliber bore will make it a great hunting piece. With a mirror bright bore and stock that is in very good condition this longrifle would look good on the wall, in the cabinet or at the range. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
