Stocked in curly ash, this iron trimmed flint longrifle is made in the Southern Mountain style. This rifle is fitted with a Bob Roller flint lock, and 38" swamped octagon Rice barrel. Used, this rifle is in excellent condition. Hand made by M. Avance, this neatly assemble longrifle will serve you well.

This rifle is fitted with a nicely browned .54 caliber 38" swamped octagon Rice barrel. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip.

After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in.

The 38" swamped octagon .54 caliber barrel has been fitted with a flared tang. The tang is mounted with a tang bolt, which engages the trigger plate. The top flat of the barrel is signed M. Avance. The rear sight is dovetailed 13" ahead of the breech and the iron blade front sight is dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle. The 3/8" ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads to accept loading and cleaning accessories.

The trigger reach is 13-1/2"" and this rifle weighs 7.5 pounds to fit an average size shooter.

The curly ash stock is finished to a nice honey brown. The all iron furniture is finished to a chocolate brown. The rifle has a few handling marks from normal use and the browned metal shows some spots of wear in the finish. The bow of the triggerguard is shaped to give the appearance of a hand forged original, which is retained by a screw and pin. An iron toeplate is fitted to protect the fragile toe area from chips. The toeplate is retained by two steel screws. The tip of the buttplate and the toeplate have bright spots from the finish wearing when the rifle is set on the ground for loading.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by this Bob Roller manufactured flint lock. Roller locks are known for their high performance and reliability. We recommend our 3/4" knapped flints #FLINT-ENG-6 by Tom Fuller for best performance in this lock. The lock is finished to the same chocolate brown as the barrel.

R. E. Davis double lever double set triggers are properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Our side view shows the simple square Kentucky cheek piece with a silver man-in-the-moon inlaid in the center of it. The iron sideplate holds two browned lock bolts and is inleted into the stock very nicely. A sling stud is mounted ahead of the toeplate. A sling swivel is installed just ahead of the middle ramrod pipe. A gray woven sling is included with this rifle.

This is a hand finished piece of workmanship, by a respected maker, used but in very good condition. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
