Constructed in the style of those rifles popular in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania during the latter portion of the 18th century, and the early 19th century, this unique flint lock longrifle was built by Minnesota gunmaker Brent Gurtek. Stocked in curly maple the rifle is trimmed in brass furniture, all of which has been finished to give the gun a slightly aged appearance. Built with today's average shooter in mind, the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-1/2" and an overall weight of 7.9 pounds.

The heart of the rifle is a .50 caliber swamped Colerain octagon barrel. The 42" swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist to reduce weight, and flares at the muzzle to align the sights. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The “radius groove rifling", Colerain uses eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels.

The rear sight is located 11" forward of the breech, while the brass blade front sight is located 2-1/2" behind the muzzle. Measuring 42" in overall length the barrel has been finished a light brown and then rubbed back to have bright areas simulating wear, most notably brighter are the corners of the octagon flats that normally wear faster than other areas. Mr. Gurtek has initialed the top flat just behind the rear sight BTG. The top flat is also engraved with a snake and a arrow just behind the muzzle. Internally the bore is bright and ready to shoot. The breech end of the barre has the serial number # 100 engraved on it. A single tang bolt engages the trigger plate below and three iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm.

Stained dark brown the curly maple stock shows off a nice amount of figure throughout its length, from buttplate to muzzlecap. Recently produced the rifle has been worked over to have a well aged look and feel. The wood has numerous small distress marks that were applied after completion, these marks correspond neatly with the patina finish of the lock and barrel to help create a consistent aged finish on the rifle. The brass patchbox installed in the butt was polished bright and allowed to age to a mellow patina, representative of all the brass furniture found on the rifle.

Our close-up view of the patchbox shows that piece in greater detail. The engraved patchbox consists of a large bezel with a whimsical design, and a traditionally hinged door. The lid opens with ease revealing the cavity below. Inside the box a brass plate has been marked S/N 100, the serial number of the rifle, under F.R.M. LLC, Mr. Gurtek's standard rifle marking.

The tapered comb, slender wrist, and wide barrel breech can all be seen from above. At the heel of the rifle an engraved buttplate comb extension sweeps over the curve of the stock to protect that area of the gun. The top of the buttstock comb is fitted with a long nickel silver inlay hand engraved with a folk art design. Sweeping towards the wrist, incised carving decorates the transition from wrist to comb. The flared tang of the breech plug is accented with a brass and nickel silver Fluer de Lys inlay.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows off the brass toeplate and triggerguard that have been used on the gun. The toeplate, which is positioned to protect the delicate wood of the stock in that position, is retained by small iron brads. A small oval is inlaid midway between the toeplate and the triggerguard. Moving forward the rear of the brass triggerguard has been pinned into position. The tapered wooden ramrod is held in place by three brass ramrod pipes, one entry and two forward. Each is finished in the same manner as the other brass furniture on the gun. At the front of the stock a brass muzzlecap has been installed to protect the end grain of the wood in that location. The ramrod does not have any fittings for loading or cleaning accessories. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to service this rifle.

Ignition is provided by a L&R Classic flintlock. The lock has a Germanic or Prussian influence with a paneled pan, and pointed tail with molding filed across it. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The traditional style flash hole vent is direct drilled, well centered on the pan, correctly positioned above the pan, where the flash is most intense.

A backside view of the rifle shows classic Lehigh Valley sideplate with pointed arrow tail. The sideplate is hand engraved with a folk art style. The square cheek of the rifle is inlaid with an eagle with outstretched wings. To the rears of the cheek the stock is inlaid with a brass sun and nickel sliver moon engraved "Der Sunin Cleps 8-21-17".
