This German Jaeger is stocked in English walnut, and trimmed in brass furniture. The walnut stock is decorated with raised carving, and a sliding wood patchbox.

The R.E. Davis lock is hand burnished bright and contrasts nicely against the stock and barrel. The large caliber swamped barrel makes this rifle both lightweight and handy, exactly what a German hunter would find desirable. The rifle is signed by contemporary builder T. Hardy on the top flat of the barrel.

The .62 caliber 31" swamped barrel was cut rifled with a 1 in 66" twist by Colerain Barrel Company. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled .012" to .016" deep depending on caliber, with six “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost.

Like many Jaeger style rifles, the buttstock is very muscular in appearance with a wide tall flat buttplate. This distinctive styling shows the Germanic influence on the rifle derives its name from the German word Jaeger, which means "hunter." These rifles often have large caliber short barrels, and sling swivels making them easy to carry.

This rifle is stock in English walnut and decorated with bold raised carving around the lock panels, transition from wrist to comb, and sliding wood patchbox. The buttstock is shaped with a raised and incised molding that extends from the toe to the triggerguard. A similar molding is shaped from the ramrod entry pipe to the black ebony muzzlecap.

Trigger reach is 13-1/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8.4 pounds.

The wide flat brass buttplate has a extended decorative finial. The elaborate finial on the buttplate shows the builders skill in inletting, since the design leaves little room to cover any mistakes.

The lock panels are shaped with a raised molding that flows into raised carving around the flared thumbnail tang of the breech plug. The swamped octagon barrel is finished to a dark brown. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 8-3/4" from the breech. A nickel silver blade front sight is fitted behind the muzzle.

The toe of the rifle is protected with a long decorative toeplate mounted with polished and blued steel screws. A diamond inlay mounts the rear sling swivel post. The forward swivel is correctly positioned to rest against the middle ramrod pipe, preventing the swivel from interfering with removing and installing the ramrod.

The ramrod pipes are shaped with a bulbous barrels. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. A extra cleaning ramrod with a jagged tip fitted is included with this rifle.

This large flint lock by R. E. Davis has a distinctly Germanic style. This early lock design has the so-called “banana" lock plate design since the lock plate curves down toward the wrist. Later locks tend to be a bit more straight. The frizzen spring is filed to a fancy shape, very handsome, retained by a hidden blind screw. Crisp flats on the integral pan mimic and amplify the octagon theme of the barrel. Notice that the pan has no bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw. Instead, a massive shouldered pivot screw supports the frizzen, which tightly fits the pan. Order a dozen of our #FLINT-ENG-7 gun flints, 7/8" size, for best performance in this lock.

The traditional Germanic style double lever double set triggers have been properly tuned to be set and fired in any combination. You may cock the lock before or after you set the triggers. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

A correct Germanic sideplate that fills the side panel is fitted to this rifle. The brass sideplate resembles the acanthus leaf design used on the buttplate comb. Two fire blued lock bolts are fitted to retain the lock and brass side plate.

The stock has raised and incised carving that extends from the transition of the comb to the wrist. The carving does have some tooling marks visible around the borders.

The sliding wood patchbox has a rounded nose. The door is shaped with a raised molding along the border. The center of the door is decorated with a raised carved design that appears as a face from either direction. Compress the spring latch toward the lid and slide the door toward the buttplate to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, patches, or other shooting accessories.

The stock has raised carving the flows down from the wrist into the stepped cheek. The square cheek is shaped with a stepped face. Opposing C scrolls extend from the cheek and decorate the buttstock from heel to toe.
