The Birmingham proof mark was used post 1813 for proofing black powder barrels. Typically placed below the view mark on the off flat of the breech. We have examined this stamp on Trade Guns by both Barbar, and Sharpe. Due to the large size of this stamp it can only be used on octagon barrels that are 1-1/8" or larger.
The inspector's mark is about .435" wide, about .465" tall, and the tool body is 2-1/2" length, 5/8" diameter, brightly polished steel, hardened to Rc 62 to 65 (as hard as a file). Wrap the body with masking tape to provide a better grip.
Made in the USA, of very hard steel, this tool will give a long life, if used correctly.

Marks on rounded or flat steel surfaces require multiple strikes, in sequence. Marks in wood require only one controlled strike.
