One of the first rifles designed by the famous John Moses Browning, of Utah, Winchester purchased his patent, and manufactured their popular Model 1885 Winchester Single Shot Rifle, more widely known as the High Wall Winchester. This example was manufactured by Browning and is chambered in the popular .45-70 caliber for use with black powder cartridges. This rifle is in well maintained condition, and is ready to accurately shoot your hand loads. This rifle is fitted with a globe front sight with spirit level and Soule style Vernier tang sight. It includes the tang sight box with inserts and two additional apertures. We have this rifle on display, ready for same day shipment on receipt of your funds, and your favorite dealer's signed FFL copy. We must deliver to a Minnesota resident, or to a licensed dealer in any other state. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" and this rifle weighs 11 pounds.

The 30" octagon barrel tapers from the breech to the muzzle. The blued barrel has a matte finish that is in excellent condition. The bore is bright and is ready to shoot. A globe front sight with aperture insert is dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. The front sight has additional inserts in the Browning sight box. The front sight also accepts Lyman No. 17 inserts, for a full set order #FS-17-INSERTS. The barrel and action have filler screws installed to mount a scope base. The right hand barrel flat is marked BROWNING MODEL 1885 CALIBER .45-70 RECOMMENDED FOR BLACK POWDER while the left hand flat reads BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN, UTAH & MONTREAL P.Q. over the marking MADE IN JAPAN.

Stocked in walnut, the butt-stock and forend are stained and finished a very nice dark brown color. The buttstock and forearm both show some figure, and is a bit more pronounced on the left side. The wrist and forend are checkered to provide the shooter with a secure grip. The pistol grip wrist allows for quick mounting and comfortable shooting of the rifle. The forearm ends in a classic Schnabel style forend tip. The buttplate is checkered steel. Our top view also shows the color case hardened action. The tang was factory drilled and tapped, and installed with a Soule style Vernier tang sight with windage and elevation adjustments. Our bottom view shows off the toe of the stock and the pistol grip cap. Our back view shows that this rifle has a oval cheek rest for a right hand shooter.

The color case hardened steel action works smoothly and properly. The hammer is pushed through half-cock and to full-cock during operation of the action. The half-cock position is safely engaged and will not allow the rifle to be fired. The serial number for this particular gun is found on the bottom right side of the receiver.

Cartridge cases are readily available from a variety of sources. It may be wise to buy a quantity of cases, all at the same time, from the same lot, for uniformity. We recommend ordering a least 100 cases, and perhaps 200, depending on your reloading schedule. Track can supply the .45-70 mold, shell holder, loading dies, bullet lubricant, loading press, sizing dies, and black powder.

This well made black powder cartridge rifle, originally designed by John Browning, built by Winchester and then reproduced by Browning.
