The Sharps Model 1877 was the last side hammer model produced by the Sharps Rifle Company. Sometimes known as the "English Model" due to it's refined styling and English made barrels. In 1878, George Lyman introduced his iconic tang sight. Sharps' final iconic side-hammer design and Lyman's sights combine to create Lyman's "Model of 1878". Manufactured by Davide Pedersoli & Company of Italy. This rifle is new, unfired, in the factory carton. The No. 2 Lyman tang sight is ready to install, with mounting holes re pre-drilled in the tang. Unlike other Sharps models, the tang sight mounting screws are 10-32 thread.

The rifle is chambered for the popular .45-70 Government cartridge. The walnut stock is fitted with a shotgun style buttplate and shaped with a checkered pistol grip. The checkered forearm is fitted with a ebony tip. The back action lock, action, and buttplate are laser engraved with a period font. Double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire set, or unset.

The 30" tapered round barrel was polished and finished to a dark blue. The tapered round barrel gives this rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. Chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge with a 1 in 18" twist. The barrel is fitted with a Lyman 17 globe front sight, a set of seven inserts is included.

Stocked in walnut the buttstock is fitted with a tall shotgun style buttplate to help spread the felt recoil over a large area, which you will appreciate when firing a string of .45-70 rounds. The pistol grip and forearm are checkered to provide the shooter with a secure grip.

Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 9.2 pounds.

The comb of the buttplate just wraps over the heel of the buttstock. The satin finished action tang is drilled and tapped to accept the Lyman No. 2 tang sight supplied with the rifle. The polished tapered round barrel is fitted with a No. 17 Lyman globe front sight.

Architectural details include the semi-circular flat on the walnut forend. The end of the forend is fitted with a ebony tip.

Notice the tiny lug at the front of the lever, which stops the lever while the extractor is seated. Press the lever slightly forward, while open. This over-travel causes the extractor to snap rearward, ejecting the fired cartridge.

The satin finished back action lock is laser engraved Model of 1878. The half cock notch is positioned well above the firing pin.

The double set trigger has double levers allowing you to cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. When fired from the front trigger alone, trigger release is a normal 2 to 3 pounds. When fired with the rear trigger set, the front trigger release may be adjusted to nearly zero, using the set screw between the triggers.

We strongly recommend using these set triggers for dry fire practice, which is perfectly harmless, provided that the hammer is fully down, not at the half-cock safety notch. Dry firing, at a small black dot on a white piece of paper, each evening, is the best way to develop skills, practice follow-through, and to eliminate the tendency to flinch during recoil.

Our back view shows the pistol grip stock with its steel buttplate. the flat smooth steel shotgun buttplate should make this 9 pound rifle very comfortable to fire from the bench, or X sticks.

Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired, as-shipped condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
