This California style halfstock is based upon an example shown in the book California Gunsmiths 1846 - 1900 by L. P. Sheldon. This rifle is stocked in Claro walnut and trimmed in nickel silver furniture with a poured pewter forend cap. The rifle is fitted with hooked breech, L&R percussion lock, and double set triggers. Unfired, the rifle is finished a light patina on the barrel. Weighing in at 9 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 14" making it well suited for today's average size shooter.

The rifle is assembled around a .50 caliber 15/16" by 34" straight octagon barrel. The .50 caliber bore is rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for patched round ball. The bore is bright in as new condition. We recommend our .490" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with our Mink Oil patch grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. The barrel is fitted with a semi buck horn rear sight dovetailed 9" ahead of the breech. A steel blade sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. Neither sight completely fills the dovetail.

The nickel silver buttplate has a gentle curve to engage the shooter's shoulder. The Claro walnut stock displays some figure in the butt. A nickel silver cap box is inlaid flush with the stock. The capbox is polished bright and mounted with brass screws with the slots aligned. To open the capbox all that is required is to lift the door until it cams open. Beneath the door is a small cavity for storing shooting accessories. There are a few small cosmetic inletting gaps, and the stock has what appears to be a worm hole near the toe. The nickel silver triggerguard is shaped with a wide open bow to accept the double lever double set triggers. The triggerguard is shaped with a curled grip rain and the rear of the bow has a finger spur in the fashion of Ohio longrifles. The barrel is breeched with a short tang secured with a tang bole and brass wood screw.

From below the nickel silver toeplate and triggerguard can be seen. The toeplate is mounted with small nails. Two wedge keys and a poured pewter forend cap finish out the forend. No ramrod entry pipe is fitted, since the ramrod enters the pewter forend cap, which protects the stock's forend and guides the ramrod. The two forward ramrod pipes are soldered to the underrib. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The ramrod has been left long and extends 1/2" past the muzzle. The side panel is fitted with a decorative nickel silver sideplate to support the single lock bolt. No cheek piece is shaped on the buttstock.
