Stocked in maple, this 20 gauge fowler is trimmed in iron. The iron furniture, barrel, and L&R lock are finished to a silvery brown. The stock is finished to a smooth satin brown. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. This fowler is offered in as-new unfired condition and is attributed to builder D. Lund. Weight is 8.3 pounds. Trigger reach is a long 14-1/4" to fit today's taller than average size shooter.

The 20 gauge 42" octagon-to-round barrel is tapered octagon for the last 12" near the breech with a single wedding band transition, and is tapered and turned round to the muzzle. The 20 gauge bore measures .617" diameter, and is ready to shoot. The exterior is finished to a textured silvery brown. The browned iron turtle shaped front sight is soldered 2" behind the muzzle. No rear sight is fitted, nor is one expected on a flint fowling gun. Thus, this smooth bore gun is legal for use in the popular NMLRA North West Trade Gun matches, shooting bird shot at ten clay birds on the trap range, and shooting round balls at paper targets on the 50 yard range. With practice, this gun will serve a primitive deer hunter at ranges up to 100 yards.

The maple stock has a light brown tone that compliments the brown finish used on the furniture, barrel, and lock. We note there is a larger size scratch in the stock finish near the forward barrel pin on the right side of the forearm. This pin was also miss-drilled and plugged during the built process. A wide, flat, comfortable iron buttplate is fitted to the buttstock. The comb of the buttplate is decorated with three flats. The large domed wood patchbox easily slides open to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing extra flints or cleaning accessories. The top view shows the flared tang of the breech plug. We note the rear of the tang stands proud of the stock. A single tang bolt passes through to engage the trigger plate below. Three small pins retain the barrel to the forearm, and we note they have all been plugged from being miss-drilled.

The bottom view shows the wide toe of the buttstock. No toeplate is used on fowling guns. The iron triggerguard has a large bow to accept a gloved finger. The guard is correctly pinned to the stock and finished to the same silvery brown as the barrel. A palm swell has been shaped in the forearm around the ramrod entry pipe. Two additional browned ramrod pipes help secure the wooden ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass loading tip that is threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The opposite end of the ramrod is fitted with a brass tip also threaded 8-32. A square cheek is shaped on the left side of the buttstock and provides a comfortable rest when aiming this 20 gauge smoothbore. A simple browned iron sideplate is inlet flush with the side panel. Two lock bolts pass through to engage the lock on the opposite side.

The L&R Early Classic flint lock has been reshaped and rounded at the tail to mimic the style of an early Queen Ann lock. The lock shows only a few marks on the frizzen from being test sparked. The lock is finished to the same silvery brown as the barrel. We recommend our 7/8" English flint #FLINT-ENG-7 for use with this lock. A curled flint trigger, with scroll work at back, is a correct feature of this early period. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner. The vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint smoothbore suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
