The unique style of Southern Mountain rifles originated from the Western Carolinas into Eastern Tennessee during the late 18th and early 19th century. This Tennessee Mountain rifle is stocked in cherry and trimmed in iron furniture with an Appalachian appearance. This rifle is fitted with a Jim Chamber's Classic Ketland flint lock and .40 caliber Green Mountain barrel. Assembled by contemporary builder Dave Minnich. This rifle is stocked with a 13-5/8" trigger reach, for today's average size shooter. This trim longrifle weighs only 6.4 pounds, and will be a pleasure to carry afield.

The Green Mountain .40 caliber cut rifled barrel measures 36" by 13/16" octagon. Rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 48" twist for patched round ball. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. We recommend our .395" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with our Mink Oil patch grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. The brass blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The barrel is finished to a silvery/gray textured antique patina. The top flat is signed Minnich. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 6" ahead of the breech.
The cherry stock is finished to a light brown with a backwoods appearance. This mountain rifle is a full dress Tennessee rifle with iron buttplate, muzzle cap, and entry pipe. All of the iron furniture is finished to an antique appearance to match the patina finish on the rest of the rifle. The buttplate is formed from sheet stock with a brazed joint at the heel, just like an antique rifle. The barrel is breeched with a short straight tang with one bolt that passes through to engage the iron trigger plate below. The stock does have a filler repair at the rear of the rounded tang.

From below the iron toeplate with lollipop finial can be seen. The toeplate protects the fragile toe area, which is otherwise often susceptible to dents and chips during loading and cleaning. The iron triggerguard is securely mounted to the stock with a screw in the rear and a pin up front. The forearm is shaped with a slender profile, the forend has the traditional flat panels and a iron muzzlecap protects the end grain of the stock. Two iron ramrod pipes and matching entry pipe secure the slender 5/16" diameter ramrod to the rifle. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a iron tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. The ramrod has been left long by 1/2". Two lock bolts are mounted through a large iron sideplates. No cheek piece is carved on the buttstock of this rifle.

This rifle is fitted with a Jim Chamber's Classic Ketland flintlock that has been reshaped on the tail. This lock is a fine London design with the frizzen gliding over a roller bearing on the frizzen spring, which is retained by a hidden mounting screw. The lock has been finished to the same antique appearance as the barrel. We recommend our 3/4" knapped flints. The single hand forged trigger provides a smooth release of the lock. Fast ignition is assured by the steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
