This Southern Mountain percussion rifle is in as-new condition. Stocked in curly ash, the stock is stained to a whiskey brown. The .54 caliber straight Colerain barrel, Davis percussion lock, and iron furniture are finished to a dark brown. Neatly assembled by contemporary builder J. F. Bergmann this rifle is signed on the top flat of the barrel. This Southern "Bear" rifle weighs 8.8 pounds. Trigger reach is 13-1/2", to fit today's average size shooter.

The .54 caliber 36" Colerain barrel is 1" straight octagon. Rifled with six radius grooves, the bore is in new condition. The barrel exterior is browned to an even chocolate brown. The top barrel flat is signed J. F. Bergmann. The off-flat is marked .54 near the breech. We recommend our .530" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patching, lubricated with our Mink Oil tallow patch grease, if you require best accuracy. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 9-1/2" ahead of the breech, a nickel silver blade with iron base front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle.

The curly ash stock is well finished, stained a whiskey brown with golden undertones. The buttstock is fitted with a southern style crescent buttplate with diamond shaped comb. The long pointed tang of the breech can be seen from above. The front screw passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is retained to the forearm with three small iron pins. From below the iron toeplate protects the toe of the buttstock. The toeplate is copper riveted to the bottom of the buttplate, a nice historical touch. The triggerguard is shaped with a long pointed tail and front finial. The front is pinned to the stock and the rear is retained with a screw. The forend is fitted with a browned muzzle cap. The wooden ramrod passes through two browned ramrod pipes and matching entry pipe. The 3/8" hickory ramrod is well finished, with a brass tip at the rear, threaded 8-32 to accept your cleaning jag or patch worm. The single lock bolt, and sideplate around it, are classic features of a Southern Mountain rifle. The square cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this big .54 caliber rifle. A nickel silver moon is inlet into the center of the cheek.

The R.E. Davis Goulcher lock is browned to match the barrel. Polished inside, the well tempered parts include a strong mainspring and a fly detent to allow set triggers. The drum is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple. R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers. This trigger is well tuned, with a light release, even when the triggers are not set.
