This Southern Mountain flintlock rifle is offered in used condition, with a bright well maintained bore. Stocked in cherry, the stock is finished to a deep red tone. The .40 caliber straight Green Mountain barrel, R.E. Davis late Ketland flintlock, and iron furniture are finished to a dark brown. Assembled by contemporary builder J. Turpin this rifle is signed on the top flat of the barrel. This slender Southern rifle weighs 7 pounds. Trigger reach is 13-1/2", to fit today's average size shooter.

The .40 caliber 42" Green Mountain barrel is 13/16" straight octagon. Rifled with eight equal land and grooves, the bore is in bright well maintain condition. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel exterior is browned to an even chocolate brown. The top barrel flat is signed J. Turpin #105. The off-flat near the lock is marked .40 CAL. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10-3/4" ahead of the breech, a nickel silver blade front sight is dovetailed 2-1/2" behind the muzzle.

The cherry stock is finished to a dark red with golden undertones. The stock has a few minor handling marks from use. The buttstock is fitted with a southern style crescent buttplate with diamond shaped comb. The long lollipop tang of the breech can be seen from above. We note a square "Dutchman style repair" can be seen at the tip of the tang. Both tang bolts pass through the stock to engage the long trigger plate below to sandwich the wrist for added strength. The barrel is retained to the forearm with four small iron pins. No muzzle cap is fitted to protect the end grain of the forearm.

From below the iron toeplate protects the toe of the buttstock. We note there is a repaired crack on the toe. A bit of glue can be seen over the crack on the right hand side of the stock. The hand forged and brazed triggerguard has a long grip rail and is browned to match the barrel. The wooden ramrod passes through two browned ramrod pipes and matching skirtless entry pipe. The 3/8" hickory ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded 8-32 to accept your cleaning jag or patch worm. The two lock bolts pass through separate sideplates. Both are classic styles of a Southern Mountain rifle. The square cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter.

The R.E. Davis Late Ketland flint lock is browned to match the barrel. Polished inside, the well tempered parts include a strong mainspring and a fly detent to allow set triggers. The “full waterproof pan" is made with rain gutters cut to drain any water away from the pan. We note the frizzen is loose when in the forward position and has side-to-side play. However, it is under tension when closed and the lock sparks very well. R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

This slender Souther Mountain rifle will be a joy to carry on your next small game hunt. It has a bright well maintain bore and is ready to shoot. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
