The Southern Mountain, or Tennessee style longrifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in iron furniture. Antique Southern Mountain rifles are ofter trimmed in iron furniture, with hardware store locks, and double set triggers. This rifle is fitted with a small Siler percussion lock, and R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers. The 42" long, .45 caliber barrel gives this rifle a modest weight at 8.4 pounds. Trigger reach is 13 inches to fit today's average to smaller than average size shooter. Hand made by contemporary builder Mike Compton this rifle is new, unfired.

The Green Mountain cut rifled barrel measures a full 42" by 7/8" octagon. Rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 60" twist for patched round ball. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. We recommend our .440" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with our Mink Oil patch grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. A semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 9" ahead of the breech. A iron blade front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle.

The maple stock is finished to a dark brown with a golden undertone. Not a "poor boy" this is a full dress Southern rifle with a crescent buttplate with a modest curve, ramrod entry pipe, and muzzle cap. All of the iron furniture is finished to a smooth brown. Note the "iron banana" style patchbox that has been used on the rifle, a typical feature found on antique rifles by Bean of Tennessee. The patchbox is easily opened by pressing rearward on the catch located near the butt, this allows the cover to spring open revealing a nicely sized cavity below, perfect for storing your extra shooting accessories. The stock has a bark inclusion that is visible just above the toeplate on the right hand side of the stock, which is visible as a thin line if the rifle is rolled in the light. The slender comb of the buttstock tapers into the wrist. The barrel is breeched with a tang that tapers to a point.

Two small steel screws retain the toeplate. The toeplate protects the fragile toe area, which is otherwise often susceptible to dents and chips. The triggerguard is in the style of Bean of Tennessee with a wide bow, narrow grip rail with curled spoon. The grip rail has copper rivet joining it to the bow. The triggerguard is signed on the bow M. Compton. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a patina finished brass tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. A single lock bolt is surrounded by a lozenge sideplate on this primitive Tennessee longrifle. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece.

This rifle is fitted with a small Siler percussion lock. The lock is finished to a matte brown and has a few edges worn bright. The percussion drum is well supported, critical to this style of ignition. A 1/4-28 threaded steel nipple is fitted to the drum. Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers are installed. The triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure.

In as new condition this modest caliber longrifle has a nice quality lock and barrel. This longrifle is new, unfired. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
