This antique early style 12 gauge double barrel English shotgun is marked J. Harris & Son, London. This fine shotgun is beautifully engraved and is stocked in checkered walnut, with Damascus steel barrels, and features a side lever. The bores are both mirror bright and the action is tight. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" and 12-3/4", and this shotgun weighs 6.6 pounds.

The Damascus steel barrels are 26 inches long and chambered for our 2-1/2" black powder shot shells. Our 12 gauge 2-1/2" brass shot shells fit correctly and operate smoothly when opening and closing the action. Both bores measure .737" at the muzzles. The wire twist pattern is clearly visible on the barrels and they have aged to a silvery brown patina. The bores are bright and in perfect condition. The barrel rib is marked J. Harris & Son, London. Laminated Steel. A small brass bead serves as a front sight. The rear of the barrel rib is engraved with a floral design. The tang is also engraved with a floral design. The tang bolt is neatly aligned with the barrel and the head is hand engraved.

Stocked in European walnut, the buttstock has a few minor handling marks, which is remarkable, considering it is well over a century old. The stock shows no evidence of having been sanded or worked on in any way. The checkering at the wrist and on the forearm is still crisp. A silver shield inlay decorates the center of the toe and is engraved with the letter F. The buttplate is of steel that has aged to a silvery patina. The comb of the buttplate is engraved with the same floral design found on the tang. The screw heads are also engraved. The trigger guard is beautifully engraved with the floral design and is marked No. 925 between the two engraved screws that retain the grip rail to the wrist. The forearm is easily dismounted by removing the wedge key, and then pulling down on the ebony tip. Once the forearm is removed from the gun, the barrels can then be dismounted by simply working the action and continuing to open them until the lower lug clears the action.

This early shotgun has dead fall hammers, meaning they do not rebound to relieve pressure from the firing pins after firing. The hammers have to be pulled back to half cock before extracting the shells, to prevent the firing pins from dragging across the empty cases. The engraved back action locks are both marked J. Harris & Son. The engraved hammers are both tight on their tumblers and locks are both crisp with secure half and full-cock notches. The engraved side action lever properly functions to “break” the action to facilitate loading and unloading of the gun. The engraved action is tight and locks up perfectly.

This shotgun is in remarkable condition for its age. Both bores are mirror bright and it is ready to shoot with black powder shot shells.
