This North West Trade Gun will be ideal for your fur trade impression. Stocked in maple, this North West Trade Gun is fitted with a mix of brass and iron hardware. This .58 caliber rifled bore is bright and has been well maintained. The stock is decorated with tacks and has an antique patina finish. Trigger reach is 12-3/4" to fit today's smaller size shooter and weight is 6.1 pounds.

The 35" barrel is octagon, with one wedding band transition, before tapering round to the muzzle. The .58 caliber bore is rifled with three wide lands and grooves. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is finished to a silvery gray with many draw file marks visible. An iron blade front sight is soldered behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 9-1/2" ahead of the breech.

The long baluster wrist runs from the lock panels to the toe, and the comb seems to sit on top of the flowing wrist. This is classic architecture for early English muskets, especially the early Sea Service muskets, which apparently served as a model for the North West Trade Gun. The design is simple and functional, and these inexpensive guns were imported and sold by the Fur Trade Companies, for many decades. Flint and percussion trade guns were still popular long after the metallic cartridge arrived, due to the low cost of ammunition for muzzle loading guns. The flat iron buttplate is secured with two steel screws. We note large inletting gaps around the buttplate. The stock has many handling marks and dents from use and cleaning. A piece of rawhide is sewn around the wrist with sinew to simulate a wrist repair. Tacks decorate both sides of the buttstock and forearm. Extra tacks are included, if you with to add more.

The bottom view shows the traditional large iron triggerguard, finished to the same silvery gray as the barrel. The triggerguard of this North West Trade Gun is correctly surface mounted. One screw retains the rear of the triggerguard and another retains the front. The trigger plate is also mounted with a wood screw. The tang is secured to the stock with a wood screw, instead of the traditional reverse tang bolt that enters through the trigger guard from the bottom of the stock.

No ramrod entry pipe is fitted, another correct feature. The two forward pipes are thin brass, with embossed grooves, much like the corrugations in cardboard, to give the pipes maximum strength against crushing or denting in hard use. The pipes allow the 3/8" ramrod to slide smoothly, to serve the barrel. The ramrod is fitted with an iron tip threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. One lock bolt retains the sideplate and lock. The rear and front sideplate screws are actually a wood screw. The brass sideplate is cast in the form of a serpent, a traditional motif for the North West Gun.

Ignition for this Trade Gun is provided by an L&R classic flint lock. Well made and finished the lock has strong internals and a quick time. The lock is finished to the same silvery gray as the barrel. Make sure to order a dozen of our #Flint-Eng-6 hand knapped English gun flints for best sparking. Behind the pan the touch hole is drilled directly, without a vent liner, and is positioned a bit forward of the center of the pan. Below the lock a single trigger has been properly installed to give good leverage against the sear.

This used North West Trade Gun has a bright bore and a great antique patina finish. Perfect for your fur trade impression! Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
